Duke Alum Giving all Blue Devil Students Free Tickets to their Bowl Game

http://wac.9ebf.edgecastcdn.net/809E...13/12/duke.png

Victory Formation- The Chick-Fil-A Bowl is set with Johnny Football and his Aggies preparing to take on this year’s best story, the Duke Blue Devils.

As the bowl committee was finalizing its matchup on Sunday, news leaked that the preliminary decision was that Miami would take on nearby Georgia. That would seem to be a better ticket draw than Texas A&M and Duke, but the Chick-Fil-A Bowl sells out every year, regardless of matchup.

Now, Duke alumni have ponied up and showed us exactly why ACC commissioner John Swofford lobbied on behalf of the Blue Devils.

Good for them. Duke has not seen any success since Spurrier left. I will be bet SOS bought a few tickets for them as well.

So you can pay for the tickets of students to go to a bowl game, but you can't pay for a cheeseburger and a coke for a student athlete?

How would that work out if say, a scholarship student-athlete of another sport at Duke other than football wanted to go to the bowl game? Would they also get a free ticket?

It's not a problem if a scholarship student athlete from another sport gets a free ticket to this game as it is not just for that athlete, it is a benefit for all students. The way I interperate the rule is you can buy a studnet athlete a buger and fries, provided you buy all students a burger and fries. It is not a benefit if it is not just for student athletes.

Since it was open to all students I would think it would be okay.

They would be fine as long as you extended the offer to all students, like someone said above. Same way student athletes can accept free food/tshirts/koozies/whatever as a handout on campus.

Correct. I am a student-employee at USC Upstate, and during our training, we have to talk about improper benefits to student athletes. An improper benefit is one that you only offer to a student athlete, and not the general student population.

I am guessing that alumni/boosters are under the same rules as employees of the university.

Very cool for the Alumni to do. TAMU should still crush Duke.

I don't think ticket prices were going to be an issue for many of the Duke students. Seriously, $90 isn't that big of a deal for most of those kids. That being said, actual interest in attending will be the real story.

Why wouldn't an alum be able to buy tickets for students? The NCAA doesn't regulate gifts given to the general student population, they regulate gifts given to the athletes that compete in NCAA sponsored events.

Just wondered what the rules are, especially if they were given to other athletes. I didn't think it would be a problem as I'm sure the Duke compliance office ok'd the deal before it was announced.
