Clowney Signs w/ Bus Cook

Saw it on twitter. This is the only link I can find right now.

Bus is known for representing Favre but also has Megatron, Jay Culter and Cam Newton as clients.

Good. I was scared that he would give in and sign with Jay-Z for the image of the whole thing. Smart choice for Clowney, in all honestly.

Wow, and only hours after he was eligible to do so. Amazing how all of that got worked so quickly...

When interviewed after the game, Clowney was asked if he knew who he would sign with. He got a big smile on his face, and said no, but then started laughing and said that he knew, but that it was private. Vic also mentioned that he never sent in any draft analysis papers, yet somehow was "hearing 2nd or 3rd" round when asked about it in a C1B interview. Who is in the ears of our athletes? I worry about runners on and around campus.

I'm pretty sure that it is okay for draft eligible players to meet with and interview agents, as long as there is no $, cars, free meals, etc being exchanged.

It's not illegal for athletes to talk to agents. They just can't promise to sign, or accept illegal benefits. Clowney and James "Bus" Cook could've went to dinner 45 nights in a row, as long as Clowney paid for his meal, and didn't accept gifts from Cook, and provided his own transportation nothing wrong would've been done.

Signing with Roc Nation would have gotten him way too much exposure but probably more money initially. I think this is a smart choice because agent or no agent hes going to get massive exposure. The xtra baggage and bad press associated with him signing with Jay Z isnt worth the extra coin up front. Considering his second contract will be like winning the lottery i predict.

Seems like a good choice. Like everyone else, I'm glad he didn't sign with Jay Z. Would have changed my entire image of JD.

TIFWIW but...

There are some writers speculating that Roc Nation might be retained to handle JD's marketing.

Gotcha. Still makes me nervous. Luckily we prepare our kids, so they will continue to make good decisions when these types of situations present themselves.

Isn't there a cap on the NFL draft now? The days of insane amounts of money are done. He's going to get the league maximum for a rookie. The rest of his money will come from his endorsement deals with major companies like Under Armour, or Pepsi, etc. He'll probably need to sign a marketing group/firm to control all of his potential endorsement deals.

His first major endorsement will probably be his shoe deal. I'm sure Under Armour has been in his ear as soon as he signed with Cook trying to persuade him to sign with them.

Signing bonuses are where the money is at for rookies I believe.

Good pick.
Guy has a nice client list and Clowney will be another good one.

Well there you go. Hope that is correct because Roc Nation has been doing big things for it's clients in the endorsement side of things.

Upon further investigation this would seem unlikely b/c Roc Nation Sports is a partnership with CAA which is Bus's biggest competitor. However, I have no clue how these deals work so maybe he would have Cook solely for team negotiations and Roc Nation for media/sponsorship deal/etc.

Re: Clowney Signs w/ Bus Cook

I don't like this at all. The good thing about singing with Jay is that his team makes sure you don't blow all your money and end up broke by the end of your playing career. That was his motive for having a sports agency, he said he was tired of seeing black athletes broke after their career was over. Something Bus probably doesn't give two shits about.

The more interesting battle will be between Nike and Under Armour to get that apparel deal.

As soon as you become a client, we will begin to reach out to companies in categories such as the automotive industry, trading card business, cellular phone service, footwear and apparel lines, and fast food chains to name a few. At this stage of the game you should be very selective in what you do, always focusing on your long term plan.

Looks like Bus Cook works with his own endorsement firm. Some of their biggest clients are: EA, Ford, MasterCard, Sears, Nike, Cadillac, Coca-Cola, Simplicity, Oakley, McDonalds, Wrangler, Reebok, Under Armour, Upper Deck, and Air Tran.
