Big Boys of the SEC

"Vanderbilt is an SEC school, but it's a different type of SEC than your Alabama, Auburn and South Carolina schools. They can put more money into the program, but it will be some time, if at all, before they can be considered anywhere close to the kind of football powerhouses see(sic) with the big boys of the SEC."

Just an opinion in a column from a NFL producer for SB Nation but still nice to see South Carolina getting some big boy props.

I once had a snooty shopkeeper tell me "SC doesn't belong in the SEC. They never should have been allowed in".

Never went back to her store and, if anything, it seems Vanderbilt is the odd one. Small, private v. all the big, public universities.

Living well is the best revenge! Go Gamecocks.

Probably because it should have been 'seen'.

LOL That's a bit extreme but I was obviously not the only one who didn't like her -- the store has gone out of business.

That's cool to see, probably has a lot to do with Latti in San Fran considering this guy is a 49er beat writer.

Used to get that "SC doesn't belong in the SEC" business from some UGA, UF, and UT fans. Haven't heard that in quite awhile. Noticed it started shutting down shortly after our Gamecock baseball team won its first NCAA championship.

Good point. Didn't think of that.

Today, on Jax sorts radio, they were talking about what the SEC would look like next year. They talked about the "Power teams in the SEC' and let off with USC before talking about Bama.

A sports columnist in Kentucky made that statement in the mid 90s about
South Carolina as I recall. He said that we were not "SEC" material and should
never had been allowed in the Conference.

Shortly after that, South Carolina went on 10 game win streak against
UK before losing the game against them in 2010. From the time we
started that streak, SC has now gone 12 of the last 13 games against
them, and UK is a team that struggles to stay out of the cellar in the
SEC East almost every single season.

If we weren't in the SEC the conference would not be benefitting from
our three consecutive 11 win seasons, Three consecutive Bowl wins and
National exposure that Coaches Lou Holtz and Steve Spurrier have brought
this program. ....... We haven't reached the pinnacle of this conference
yet, but we Belong here without a doubt. WE BELONG HERE

Yes, we beat 6 teams that won bowls this year and 2 of them won BCS bowls.
Included in all that is we had 3 wins against top 15.

It's not really shocking anymore to hear our name being brought up with the big boys.

Why are we hanging on a sports writer's every word to validate to ourselves that we belong in the conversation with the best teams? Stop it. Act like you've been there.

Re: Big Boys of the SEC

We're not big boys until we have a big boy trophy in the case. Just because some random, singular beat writer or radio guy calls us big time, doesn't mean the consensus United States thinks we are.

Re: Big Boys of the SEC

I like that we are in the Top 4/5 "RIGHT NOW" (#2 by national Rankings)
but this is our first season in his position and we need to remember that a
strong / good season does not mean (as you guys say) "We Are An SEC
Big Boy". Do this for the next 3-4 years (finish in the Top 1/4 of the SEC
Standings) and we can truly start to call ourselves one of the Top SEC Teams.
We have become a Very Strong SEC program over the last 4/5 years. I can
say for certain that we are considered a strong "Eastern Conference Contender"
now on a yearly basis. ... Top 4/5 in the SEC overall ? This year maybe but
can we maintain it ? I prefer to say we are still a very strong Program in the
SEC that still has some work to do before we can take on that Big Boy status.

For anyone who has issues with this point of view, just remember where we
were in our first few seasons in the SEC. We were basically where UK is
right now, and in those early / mid 90s we DREAMED of finishing above
5th Place in the Conference. While Holtz was the coach here, we started to
do some things we had not done since joining the SEC. We started to finish
in 4th and 3rd place and our dream then became to finish above 4th place
on a regular basis. ... When Coach Spurrier took over, our hopes rose to the
point of saying we wanted to become one of THE BIG THREE / FOUR in the
SEC East and be in contention for the East. Conf. Title yearly. ... We have
Surpassed UT, and are Even with Florida and Georgia and have even had
a surge of success against UGA in the past 4 years. We are now One of the
Big Boys (IN THE EAST).... However, we need to start winning the East and
at least play for the SEC Title a couple of times every five years before we
will gain SEC Big Boy. ... It can be done. We are close right now, but we still
have to prove it by getting to Atlanta. Only doing it once since joining the
SEC, and having not returned since 2010 means we are not quiet there just
yet.

Re: Big Boys of the SEC

We're close, just need to win the SEC one year. That's clearly the next step.
