Thoughts on the team

Ok this messageboard has been fairly quiet recently... baseball is right around the corner... what are your thoughts on the team... the starters, who will be the surprises, projections, etc.

Re: Thoughts on the team

I don't really start thinking about that until they start practicing and I can see what, if anything, has changed since Fall.

Re: Thoughts on the team

Weekend rotation of Jordan Montgomery, Jack Wynkoop, and Wil Crowe. Crowe may end up being the Saturday starter (to keep the rotation L-R-L) but that would be a coaches preference.

C- Greiner
1B - Martin
2B - Schrock
3B - Pankake
SS - Mooney
LF - Caldwell/Cone
CF - English
RF - Bright
DH - Celek/Caldwell

DC Arendas, Jordan Gore, Weber Pike, Widener coming off the bench as needed.

My Final 35 Man would be:

Tanner English
Connor Bright
Pat Harrington
Joel Seddon
DC Arendas
Marcus Mooney
Joey Pankake
Zack Madden
Jack Wynkoop
Evan Beal
Jordan Gore
Logan Koch
Taylor Widener
Tyler Haswell
Gene Cone
Grayson Greiner
Max Schrock
Vince Fiori
Brison Celek
Matt Vogel
John Parke
Elliott Caldwell
Kyle Martin
Jordan Montgomery
Curt Britt
Hunter Privette
Wil Crowe
Josh Knab
Cody Mincey
Josh Reagan
Matt Williams
Trey McNickle
Brock Maxwell
Jackson Smith
Weber Pike

Gene Cone was one of the best defensive outfielders this fall, and his bat wasn't a huge disappointment either. Caldwell may get the start in LF on opening day, but I could definitely see Cone getting some playing time - especially if Elliott's defense becomes an issue. Elliott's bat will keep him in the lineup, but he may end up being the DH.

A position that will be filled once the season starts. Cody Mincey, Evan Beal, and Matt Vogel all are serious contenders.

Practice started Monday, the 13th. Pre-Season scrimmages start Friday I believe. I may be wrong on that account though.

Official practices don't start until this Friday. Workouts started the 13th (with no coaches around).

No scrimmage on Friday with the highs being in the mid 30's. They will scrimmage on Saturday and Sunday.

LOL!!! We played in weather that cold last season! (See Sunday Clemsux game. It was FRIGID!!!)

I never want to go through another cold season like we had last year. There is no reason why I should still need to carry a blanket into a game in May.

I knowwwww....crazy they won't practice in that weather. I know high schools have rules that you can't practice in this type of weather but had no idea it would be like that for college. LOL

I was thinking they aren't scrimmaging Friday since that is the first official day of practice, not because of weather.

I'm cautiously optimistic about this year.

Re: Thoughts on the team

We were an out or two shy of making The Big Show last season. Our defense was atrocious by our lofty standards. We need to improve on that, and moving the biggest weak link away from the infield may help in that regard. IMO we'll be fine with Monty and Wynkoop as our Fri and Sat starters: we need to solidify our BP and Closer roles but we got some very talented depth to work with. Coach Meyers will have his work cut out in determining roles. We'll need more than just one middle guy and one closer to go to all season long, like we had last season.

Hoping to see career years at the plate by Greiner, Pankake, Martin, and English with averages well north of .300. Excited about Schrock's 2nd season, and in seeing what all the new talent can do....

Re: Thoughts on the team

Pitching: Pitching should be fine. Monty and Wynkoop are very good and are tough to beat when they are on. The third starter will go to Wil Crowe and I like him being the Saturday starter to keep the rotation L-R-L. We will have plenty of midweek starters/relievers in Reagan, Parke, Vogel, Beal, and Seddon. I believe the closing role will go to Mincey. I think are pitching can be ELITE, if the freshmen deliver and are what they are suppose to be.

Defense: LF and SS are really the only positions of concern. LF is a battle between Pankake/Caldwell/Cone. I believe Caldwell wins the battle in LF, mainly because of his bat and Pankake will play 3B. I think SS is Mooney's position to lose, considering he was recruited as a SS specialist.

C- Griener
P- Montgomery
1B- Martin
2B- Schrock
SS- Mooney
3B- Pankake
LF- Caldwell
CF- English
RF- Bright

Our Offense will go as far as Pankake, Schrock, Griener, English, Caldwell and Martin take them.

Getting to Omaha is most certainly a realistic opportunity and when you get there you never know what can happen.

I agree on all points. I see us winning 40-44 games this year in the regular season. Even if we go 2-n-out in the SEC Tournament that is good enough for a Regional Host. If we luck up and win 1 in the SEC tournament with 42-43 wins (meaning a Reg Season + SEC tournament record of 43-15 at worse) then we could even slip in as a National Seed. Dreaming, because obviously the works got to be put in to do it, but this teams got talent. Some of it may be young, and some of them may be new to the entire process, but if they can put it together we should be really good.

*For reference we went 39-16 in the regular season this past year (39-18 in Reg Season + SEC tournament). We had that one rained out game against Vandy that was never made up obviously.
