I thought they already had one. Heard they were undefeated.

Either way, I guarantee this has nothing to do with Carolina football.

What division would they be in? Div 2 or FCS?

Re: Winthrop adding football?

^They would be FCS in the Big South, but unless they are the position that UNC Charlotte is in with Jerry Richardson, wouldn't really be worth it. They are a great basketball school with a rabid fanbase which could support a football program but the costs for starting one up is the problem

I have conflicting feelings about this. On one hand I admit I found this funny because I thought EXACTLY the same thing, but as a graduate of WU, I'm also a little offended.

Really would've been nice if they'd beat UNC-C to the punch.

I grew up in Rock Hill and claim Winthrop as my secondary school. Adding football has been discussed for 15 years or more, but it's not happening any time soon because the money just isn't there.

This type of article pops up every couple of years from the Herald. Same story, same quotes, just change some names.

I remember seeing one the last time the discussion of them starting football came up. It was basically their current logo on a helmet.

Sure, why not when the SC government forces the two big schools to play you and pay you lots of money.

Yeah, my girlfriend (who goes there) was talking about how all the students got an email about it. I don't think the student body (as a whole) is too excited about it. In fact, they don't seem to be too into the basketball either.. (even though their new parking permit stickers have a seemingly forced chant in "Rock the Hill" on the sticker itself)

I could be wrong, but I think the student body just doesn't care for sports. My girlfriend is in the Music department, so maybe the people I know there aren't the most appropriate sample, but it's just not the vibe I get from the students there. It seems a lot of them are more excited about the marching band prospect than the football prospect

Just an outside take.

I didn't even read the article, I've heard for almost 10 years now that they were planing on adding Football. If they do, great. Let them play Clemson.

UNCC will be CUSA FBS in 2016 and the plans to expand the stadium to 40K were drawn up when it was built they even laid the footings for it on the top concourses.

Winthrop could help fill the FCS vacuum in the South as teams like App st, Geo St, Ga Southern, UNCC etc move up to FBS

Last time it came from the university too...maybe 2009 or 2010. Sent out a survey about adding football in an alumni newsletter. My mom, a WU alumna, showed it too me when I was at her house one weekend. Sent the results out a few months later and the Herald reported those results.
