Lorenzo Ward and his staff were in Austin

Did anyone see this?

South Carolina defensive coordinator Lorenzo Ward and his staff were in Austin last Friday, Saturday and Sunday to talk strategy with new Texas coach Charlie Strong and his defensive staff.

With the departure of defensive ends Jadeveon Clowney and Chaz Sutton, Ward is looking at using three down linemen more this season, one fewer than usual for his 4-2-5 defense.

"We're just not going to have the horses at defensive end as we have had in the past," Ward says.

Ward's visit traces back to he and Strong's long-time friendship. "Charlie's probably done as good of a job as anybody we've seen in the three-down, but still use a lot of that four-down personnel," Ward says.

Charlie ran the 3-3-5 when he was here because there wasn't depth on the D line.

I like it. UF's defense were always very stout when Meyer + Strong were at Florida

I have thought for awhile that our pressure on the QB is going to have to come from blitzing LB's or DB's. We have some nice LB's now and it's a little down for us on the DLine, good way to get another quality player on the field.

Makes sense with our abundance of linebackers. I like it.

Charlie's defense was the best thing about the Gamecock teams he coached. Not many huge names but well designed and for the most part, well executed.

This shows me that Whammy is willing to evolve to improve. I like hearing this!

Great idea to switch it up

Strong's defenses at Carolina were good with the exception of third and long. We could not stop a third and long.

I think the 3-4 sucks. If you don't have a real anchor for a nose guard, you can get blown back. With the size of our linebackers, I don't think we could seal the edges at all unless they put a DE at OLB.

If we can't get Strong as our next coach I fully vote we keep it in house and promote Ward. He is a smart man and knows his stuff

I hate the 3-4 and it's variations.

I think the 3/4 will only work if you have a stud at nose tackle and some real horses on the outside to rush the passer.

Heck yea. I'm sure Charlie would leave Texas in a hot minute to come here!

pretty sure this news is 3-4 weeks old so he wouldn't have been in austin this weekend.

Not a fan at all of the 3-4. I just don't see where we have the personnel.

Re: Lorenzo Ward and his staff were in Austin

IF we do this, I can see us going with a "3-4" but with one of the bigger LB's lining up as a pseudo DE and then running our regular base Defense. So in other words a 3-4 in name only.
