Spring Practice News

LB Kaiwan Lewis and Spur Sharrod Golightly will have scopes done to their knees and miss 2-3 weeks of spring camp. Don't think this is serious as typically the established starters aren't used much in the spring anyways. And both the LB and Spur positions are loaded to the point of almost over-flowing, and with pretty impressive talent. The only concern here is that some other younger guys on the depth chart will be able to work their way up the chart and maybe challenge the 2 veterans while they are out recovering...

Also WR Kane Whitehurst suffered a sprained foot in practice: no news yet on how serious or how much time he'll miss...

I was about to post this. Bad news...3 injuries

Other notes:

Walton working at WLB and Roberts at MLB

English at 248 Lbs.

Also Spurrier mentioned Jody Fuller had his best practice as a Gamecock today.

I am glad Fuller is coming around, he came in on a high note with coaches, went stale for a bit, but is coming on strong this year. If only Shamier Jeffery could do the same.

They decided at the last minute to move today's practice into the indoor facility, more due to cold than rain. But it was closed to both media as well as public, when originally it was open to both when it was set to be held out side. So no one was able to provide a practice report today...

Thursday's practice should be better, as the temps are expected to be in the 70s and mostly clear...

In his interview, English said Coach Joe has helped him with his nutrition (what to eat to gain weight) and conditioning, and he is faster and stronger than he was before.

Sidenote: English, a redshirt sophomore, gave a very strong interview. I wonder if the coaches selected English as the only player to provide the media an interview because he is expected to be a leader. He acted and talked like one in his interview. English is well spoken and communicates exceptionally well. LINK

Two interesting comments were by Whammy. He specifically mentioned the new defensive schemes, and indicated that somehow those give him more depth on the DL. Although none of the media guys were bright enough to ask a follow up question, I'm guessing that he was referring to the 3-4 games they are studying this off season.

As for the DBs, Whammy said that the depth chart for the cornerbacks is essentially meaningless as Sydney Rhodes would actually be the starter if the season were starting this spring. He told the players this. He also said that Brison Williams is playing some CB. My guess is that Brison may see a lot of action at corner until the freshmen CBs prove they can handle the schemes.

PS: Whammy likes Jonathan Walton (Sophomore) a lot because of his athleticism. He moved Walton to Will LB to take some of the pressure associated with calling plays off him and so he can focus on making defensive plays. My speculation is that Whammy wants to rush Walton off the edge frequently. He weighs almost 240 according to the spring roster.

LB Coach Botkin said that the LBs were learning how to disguise the defenses. Last year, the emphasis was getting them lined up in the correct spots more than playing games with the QB's head.

Interesting...he may wind up starting somewhere. Could have 2 good seasons left in him if his health holds up.

Had everything ready to go. I listened to 107.5 @ Lunchtime yesterday and
they were saying that Practice was scheduled for 4:15 and open to the
public. Got off at 5:00, and headed to the practice field and ........... EMPTY.

Turned on the Radio and within 5 minutes, Heath Kline said that Spurrier
had decided at the last minute to move practice indoors because of the bad
weather, and closed it to the public and the Media. .....I'm ready to do it all
again Thursday IF they have it open.

My guess is that if Matulis is working at RG this early, then I'm also assuming
that they might move AJ to left tackle ......to see if we can find a SOLID
player out there. Cory wasn't cutting it against the better DEs we faced last
year. If that's the case, even if AJ doesn't move to LT, then we will have a
solid #2 at RG behind Cann for the season. ... Matulis is a big ole boy, and
we need to find a place for him to grow into a position.

Yep. He had a really good offseason in the weight room and healing.

Heck of a battle brewing for that RG spot.

We will definitely need Matulis next year at OT

That's not happening. Cann is staying at G. Shell and Robinson are the starters at T.

The battle is at RG between Rodgers and Matulis. Possibly Waldrop sliding over if they are not comfortable.

And Cann plays LG.

Re: Spring Practice News

My "routine" is to find about 3 sources on the net that has the roster for
the start of practice to make sure it's at least 95% accurate with the numbers
on the field when practice starts. There's ALWAYS some last minute number
changes that the rosters don't reflect until about 2-3 practices into the
start of the schedule. There's also some walkons that join the team late, that
don't get listed until about that same time, so there's always some confusion
at the fist couple of practices.

About four years ago, I started printing out my own format for the roster.
I have two separate sheets (one for offense and Specialists) and the other
for Defense and coaching staff. I break those down into individual positions
and have them listed numerically. It makes it very fast to look at the number
on the field and find the number on the roster by the position they're lined
up at. ...... I noticed that this year, Gamecock Central has a roster now
exactly like mine ! I copy a few extra and end up giving them to people that
I'm standing near when they ask me "who is number _ _ _ _ _ " ?. I guess
they (one of them) made their way over to GCC guys........ I should have
gotten a patent on it a few years ago !

Well the though was if Mike gets healthy, he could start at OT this coming season....or wind up leaving football all together due to his shoulders.
He was the one guy who appeared to be good enough to maybe start at T over one of our current 2 guys.

Cann actually practiced the majority of Spring last season at RG. I know he
started the season as our starting LG, and that may be the position he practices
at and starts this season as well. ... may have been lack of players, or due
to injuries, but Cann was used mainly as a RG at spring practices and
scrimmages last year.

Regardless, we need to find a solid LT. Either Cory needs to greatly improve
or we need to get someone ready that can upgrade that position. Cory held
his own when the competition was equal or less talented, but when we faced
some of the better DEs on the schedule, he was the weak link on the O/Line.
He was either getting eaten up and beaten, or he was frustrated to the point
of costing us multiple Procedure / Holding penalties in big games and crucial
points of the game.

Robinson will be ok again this year. Best option we have there. Matulis would be working at OT if Elliot wasn't comfortable with him. The only open spot up for grabs is RG and that's where they are giving Matulis his shot.
