Re: BEST HAIR BAND TOURNAMENT: Motley Crue (#2) vs Tesla (#10)

I have a feeling I know who will win this matchup. I also have a feeling
it will not be the better band. Not saying that voter's opinions are wrong,
but if you look at the two and compare Musical and Vocal talent. Lyrics
and Melodies etc... Tesla is the better band.

Motley Crue came on FAST early in this wave of Hair Rock / Glam Metal
and drew a very large following. They established themselves in the first
couple of years in the early 80s as THE best act of the hair band craze.
I didn't really care for Too Fast For Love (their first album), but when I heard
the singles off of Shout at the Devil, I ended up buying the Cassette and
it was a KILLER ALBUM !. ... IMO, Motley Crue peaked with that album, and
never did anything close to it artistically since. Still, the Crue gained a
huge fanbase early that stayed loyal to them through the decades and
that says a lot for the appeal of ANY kind of band / artist. I had them on
my nominations list just below middle of the pack. I put them on the list
because of the impact of Shout at the Devil, and the impression I got from
that body of work in regards to Hair Metal.

Tesla was basically the opposite. Came in quietly, rode the popularity of
a couple of singles early on, and put out a couple of other good albums
with some quiet singles off of those before fading in the late 80s. Small
but VERY loyal fanbase. Looking back at their short but immensity talented
career, you realize that Tesla was a band that could have been a lot
more popular had they formed and recorded Blues / R&B Rock 5-6 years
earlier. IMO, they came along at the wrong time, and got tangled up in
"The Disco Of Rock" with this short but interesting genre of the 80s. I listed
Tesla as one of my top 3 favorite Hair Bands. Still consider them to be one of
the VASTLY under rated bands that came out of the 80s (all genres)...Way
too talented of an act, with way too short of a career. They Were A
Damn Good Band.

TESLA gets my vote in this one

As I've stated (often!) before, to me Hair Metal represents image over talent (although a little bit of talent helps), and no band embodied that more than the Crue. They're my choice to win the whole thing, so obviously I'm going with them here

Agreed Tesla was a great band, but MC wins out easily in this category

I love teslas music. They were one of my favorites from the late 80's to early 90's. Great radio contraversey was an excellent album.

The Crue gave us tons of heavy hits and, arguably, one of the best rock autobiographies ever penned: THE DIRT.

I have mad respect for Tesla. Great band. But I have to go with the Crue.

I saw Tesla perform when they were just starting out and their music was fantastic. But the Crue had a killer show and just enough catchy tunes to keep you interested. And the girls flocked to their shows which made it even better. There isn't much better than blondes in black leather halters and short black skirts and heels.

While Tesla has a bunch more artistic integrity and talent, I still voted for Cre because the product--at least in the early going--was more compelling, to my 12-13 year old sensibilities anyway. These guys are perfect for puberty. In fact, pretty sure Tommy is still stuck there.

They had some good songs on the first two albums, but they were mostly selling a dumb fantasy to people like me. The music doesn't age all that well (with a few exceptions), but I do remember being vulnerable to its magic back middle school (circa 1987-88). Tesla never did that for me, so they lose this vote.

They also introduces me to GnR, their opener on the Girls Girls Girls tour (weeks before Appetite came out).

I had to go with The Cre. My favorite band until I discovered Metallica.

I liked Tesla very much.

I loved Cre at one time. Shout at the devil was a fabulous album. I did not love them after they started wearing pink during the theatre of pain days.

I voted for Cre.
