Retractable Awning

I am looking to purchase a retractable awning to put on the back of my house to help shade my deck since it gets so much direct sunlight. Anyone have any recommendations on brands and/or whom to buy from in the Lexington/Columbia area?

I'd say leave it the way it is to keep guests from overstaying their welcome :blah:

considered planting trees instead?

Sunsetter looks to have a good product from my prior research. I just need to find someone good locally that works with them.

Trees aren't really an option since I live in a subdivision and my backyard isn't big to begin with. I have a pretty decent size 14 ft by 28 ft deck that the sun just blisters. I have three small kids that love to play out there but it is pretty difficult to do in the summer.

I wouldn't have trees big enough to provide shade that clost to my house, too much of a chance of one hitting the house during weather

there are a variety of species of maple that provide excellent shade, are flexible, have small limbs, and don't grow very tall that may be great alternatives.

Screen in a portion of the deck.

Thanks for all the info.

Screening-in is a option I didn't think about, but the kids play with a lot of water toys on the deck and their small sandbox is on there as well.

I don't have any info, but we are actually thinking about doing the same thing in the same area. What sort of estimates have you seen? PM me if you'd like.

I haven't gotten that far yet. Hopefully I can get someone out to the house in a couple of weeks when I have off. I will let you know what kind of prices I get.

Re: Retractable Awning

So I checked on the Sunsetter since they seem the be the leading brand at least. The contacted a local dealer for me and he is coming out next week to look at things and give me some estimates. He seemed pretty knowledgeable on the phone. He said most awnings were between 2-3k depending on what kind you get. This was about the price I estimated from looking online.

Seems like building a permanent roof over the deck would cost less than that, even if you had to purchase the tools.

Re: Retractable Awning

That cost is for the motorized version. You are probably right about the permanent roof.
