Walkons ...

Hard to argue that our walk-on talent has greatly improved since the HBC's arrival. And, with better walkons come better practice, better chemistry, better work ethic. Walkons are, by nature, the epitome of "blue collar," which I've seen mentioned time and time again.

With that in mind who are the walkons best remembered from the past, even if they later earned a scholarship. And who are our current walkons that are most likely to contribute?

I know everyone's first answer is going to be Hank Campbell. But over the years who are your favorites? Who do we have now with potential.

Kane Whitehurst? Anyone else?

Spencer Lanning? if he wasn't a walk on then Bobby Wallace? If he wasn't a walk on then I don't know.

Think Lanning was but I'm pretty sure Wallace was part of Spurrier's first recruiting class. The legend of Big Sherm was pretty fun to watch

Believe Jamon Meredith may have been a walk on? Either that or a very low 2 star. Chisholm is a good one too.

Don't forget our little Fry guy that didn't even get an "A" on his jersey his first game out. One of my favorite images from this past season is Clowney congratulating him when he came off the field after making a FG - don't remember which game. They looked like David and Goliath!

Agree that they have improved, but you'd think (hope) that would improve our special teams, specifically coverage and returns, where I've seen several walk-ons competing.

CC Whitlock comes to mind. I believe he walked on. Filled a void for us.

No, CC signed with us and was on scholly.

We had a DB a couple of years ago that was a walk-on that was pretty good, I'm thinking it was Marty Markett, he got some pretty good playing time.

Sidney Rhodes is a walk-on that has contributed, Whitehurst has contributed, but probably our best two walk-ons in my memory have been Garrett Chisolm and Hank Campbell.

Garret Chisolm

Garret Chisolm realized the dream of everyone who has even thought of walking on for the University of South Carolina and made the freaking NFL

Quote:

In 2008, Chisolm enrolled at the University of South Carolina. After spending one year at South Carolina, Chisolm tried out for the South Carolina Gamecocks football team as an unrecruited walk-on football player.[4] He started practicing with the scout team in August 2009 and quickly drew the attention of the coaching staff.[1] Head coach Steve Spurrier recalled, "I remember one day coach Lorenzo Ward said, 'That new kid over there has knocked our guys on their butts.'"[2] Spurrier was also impressed by Chisolm's work ethic: "He's got a wonderful attitude that hopefully will rub off on all these other players. As a coach, you love those kind of guys. You love those guys that really act like this is important to them."[2]
Chisolm made the team as an offensive lineman and earned his first start in early November 2009. After earning his third consecutive start against Clemson, Chisolm's quick rise to the starting lineup for an SEC squad was described as "one of the best stories in the league."[5] Reminding the press that Chisolm had not even joined the team until two weeks before the season started, offensive line coach Eric Wolford said, "I wouldn't think that's ever happened in the history of the SEC. It may have, but it was probably a long time ago."[5] Strength and conditioning coach Craig Fitzgerald also noted the remarkable nature of Chisolm's accomplishments:
"You can go an entire career and you'll never see another story like this, never. ... If you're a walk-on in the [Southeastern Conference], you're lucky if you finish out your eligibility by being a part-timer on special teams. You might start a few games along the way as a part-time fullback. You don't become a starter in a couple of months, especially on the offensive line."[6]
During the 2009 season, Chisolm established himself as one of the best players on the squad.[1][7] Chris Low, SEC specialist for ESPN.com, said of Chisolm: "He really is one of the best success stories in this league, starting his career as a walk-on, working his way up to where he's not only a part of that offensive line but he's an integral part of that offensive line and now starting."[8]
