Favorite Music Lyrics

Lyrics are obviously poetry. I've never acquired much of an appreciation of traditional poetry but many lyrics move me deeply. My all time favorite are from Peter Gabriel
"In your eyes
I see the doorways of a thousand churches
In your eyes
The resolution of all the fruitless searches"

Peace Train "Cat Stevens"

Now I've been happy lately
Thinking about the good things to come
And I believe it could be
Something good has begun

Oh, I've been smiling lately
Dreaming about the world as one
And I believe it could be
Some day it's going to come

'Cause out on the edge of darkness
There rides a peace train
Oh, peace train take this country
Come take me home again

Now I've been smiling lately
Thinking about the good things to come
And I believe it could be
Something good has begun

Oh, peace train sounding louder
Glide on the peace train
Come on the peace train
Yes, peace train holy roller

Everyone jump upon the peace train
Come on the peace train

There are so many specific lines of songs that you can find meaning to,
that it's hard to put a finger on one specific "favorite". Billy Joel wrote a
lot of songs with "Life Messages" and he had a lot of really good songs you
could listen to and get sound advice from if you listened to the words he
penned. One of his that always stuck out to me was the line from
"My Life"

"They will tell you, you can't sleep alone in a strange place.
Then they'll tell you, you can't sleep with somebody else.
Ah, but sooner or later you sleep in our own space.
Either way, it's OK you wake up with yourself"

Too many to list them all but here are two of mine-

We scorch the earth

We stoop so low
To reach so high

We satisfy our endless needs
And justify our bloody deeds
In the name of destiny
And in the name of God

Re: Favorite Music Lyrics

Two sets of lyrics come to mind...
1) from "One of My Turns" on 'The Wall' by Pink Floyd

Day after day, love turns gray
Like the skin on a dying man
And night after night, we pretend it's all right
But I have grown older, and you have grown colder
And nothing is very much fun anymore...

2) from "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" by Gordon Lightfoot

Does anyone know where the love of God goes
When the waves turn the minutes to hours?

I love music and lyrics. Here are a few of my favorites.

"That's the way the world goes 'round.
You're up one day; the next your down
It's a half an inch of water and you think you're gonna drown
That's the way the world goes wound" -John Prine

"I want conflict I want decent;
I want the Scene to represent;
Our hatred of authority;
A fight against compliancy;
stop singing songs 'bout girls and love;
You killed the owl and freed the dove;
Confrontation and politics replaced with harmonies and shticks;
When did punk rock become so tame?
These f***ing bands all sounds the same" Nofx

"I don't understand why you beg for forgiveness just before you do it again. Is it more altruistic to worship or actually help your fellow man?" Nofx

"Roll me up and smoke me when I die" Willie Nelson

Raw Sexual Emotion from the master of wordplay:

"Peelin' off my boots and chaps, I'm saddle sore.
Four bits gets you time in the rack, she'll scream for more.
Fools gold outta your mind, those girls are soakin' wet,
'n no tongue's drier than mine. I'll come when I get back ... Back in the saddle again".

Black - Pearl Jam

Quote:

Hey... oooh...

Sheets of empty canvas, untouched sheets of clay
Were laid spread out before me as her body once did.
All of five horizons revolved around her soul as the earth to the sun
Now the air I tasted and breathed has taken a turn

Ooh, and all I taught her was everything
Ooh, I know she gave me all that she was

And now my bitter hands chafe beneath the clouds of what was everything.
Oh, the pictures have all been washed in black, tattooed everything...

I take a walk outside, I'm surrounded by some kids at play
I can feel their laughter, so why do I sear?
Oh, and twisted thoughts that spin round my head, I'm spinning, oh,
I'm spinning, how quick the sun can drop away

And now my bitter hands cradle broken glass of what was everything
All the pictures have all been washed in black, tattooed everything...

All the love gone bad turned my world to black
Tattooed all I see, all that I am, all I'll be... yeah...

Uh huh... uh huh... ooh...

I know someday you'll have a beautiful life,
I know you'll be a sun in somebody else's sky,
But why, why, why can't it be, can't it be mine?

Aah... uuh..

Eddie Vedder explained in the Pearl Jam 20 documentary that this song is about first relationships. “The song is about letting go,” said Vedder. “It’s very rare for a relationship to withstand the Earth’s gravitational pull and where it’s going to take people and how they’re going to grow. I’ve heard it said that you can’t really have a true love unless it was a love unrequited. It’s a harsh one, because then your truest one is the one you can’t have forever.”

yep..after the buildup of the entire song...Eddie Vedder end the song with a bit of poetic self-pity and sorrowful regret.

I know someday you'll have a beautiful life,
I know you'll be a sun in somebody else's sky,
But why, why, why can't it be, can't it be mine?

"The Trooper"

You'll take my life but I'll take yours too
You'll fire your musket but I'll run you through
So when you're waiting for the next attack
You'd better stand there's no turning back.

The Bugle sounds and the charge begins
But on this battlefield no one wins
The smell of acrid smoke and horses breath
As I plunge on into certain death.

The horse he sweats with fear we break to run
The mighty roar of the Russian guns
And as we race towards the human wall
The screams of pain as my comrades fall.

We hurdle bodies that lay on the ground
And the Russians fire another round
We get so near yet so far away
We won't live to fight another day.

We get so close near enough to fight
When a Russian gets me in his sights
He pulls the trigger and I feel the blow
A burst of rounds take my horse below.

And as I lay there gazing at the sky
My body's numb and my throat is dry
And as I lay forgotten and alone
Without a tear I draw my parting groan.

Inspired by http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Cha..._Brigade_(poem)

This song just kick azz. It is heavy Metal poetry and Bruce can bring the vocals like no other before or since.

"Civil War"

"What we've got here is failure to communicate.
Some men you just can't reach...
So, you get what we had here last week, which is the way he wants it!
Well, he gets it!
N' I don't like it any more than you men." *

Look at your young men fighting
Look at your women crying
Look at your young men dying
The way they've always done before

Look at the hate we're breeding
Look at the fear we're feeding
Look at the lives we're leading
The way we've always done before

My hands are tied
The billions shift from side to side
And the wars go on with brainwashed pride
For the love of God and our human rights
And all these things are swept aside
By bloody hands time can't deny
And are washed away by your genocide
And history hides the lies of our civil wars

D'you wear a black armband
When they shot the man
Who said, "Peace could last forever."
And in my first memories
They shot Kennedy
An' I went numb when I learned to see
So I never fell for Vietnam
We got the wall of D.C. to remind us all
That you can't trust freedom
When it's not in your hands
When everybody's fightin'
For their promised land

And
I don't need your civil war
It feeds the rich while it buries the poor
Your power hungry sellin' soldiers
In a human grocery store
Ain't that fresh
I don't need your civil war

Look at the shoes you're filling
Look at the blood we're spilling
Look at the world we're killing
The way we've always done before
Look in the doubt we've wallowed
Look at the leaders we've followed
Look at the lies we've swallowed
And I don't want to hear no more

My hands are tied
For all I've seen has changed my mind
But still the wars go on as the years go by
With no love of God or human rights
'Cause all these dreams are swept aside
By bloody hands of the hypnotized
Who carry the cross of homicide
And history bears the scars of our civil wars

"WE PRACTICE SELECTIVE ANNIHILATION OF MAYORS AND GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS
FOR EXAMPLE TO CREATE A VACUUM
THEN WE FILL THAT VACUUM
AS POPULAR WAR ADVANCES
PEACE IS CLOSER" **

I don't need your civil war
