Apple TV

Is an Apple TV worth the money? Thinking about getting one but wondering if it's really worth it. A little tired of paying TWC all this money when we don't even watch half of the channels

The Roku 3 is a vastly superior device and you can get it cheaper. The only thing Apple TV has going for it is if you already have other apple devices.

I use Apple TV solely because it connects with my iPhone and iTunes... Don't know anything about the other similar devices.

What's your intended purpose for it? Unless it's being paired with other apple products, you're probably better off getting google's chromecast ($35) or a Roku.

I have Apple products, which is one reason why I'm interested in one. I have an iPad and my wife has an iPhone and iPad Mini. I plan on getting an iPhone when my upgrade comes as well

If streaming your library is a big deal and you have no other way to do it on the big screen then go for it. It will be the most seamless experience in that regard. Keep in mind you can only have one Apple ID logged in at a time, though I'm not sure if that affects which products can use AirPlay or not.

It works well if you are already enslaved by apple as i am. The thing is though without a xfinity account or similar you obviously dont get espn3. At that point (and assuming no hbogo account) you really need a Netflix (in which case the iphone control is nice but not a huge difference to roku id guess) or rely 90% on what you stream from computer/ipad/iphone. I works well for me.

I can get ESPN 3 through Time Warner. I don't have netflix but my wife has an account. Speaking of espn 3- I'm assuming the sec network will have an online stream app/website? Since it is owned by espn

I've used the watch espn app thru my Apple TV using my phone as a hotspot. And I'm 40.

Not sure of what format you store your music in, but I have heard people have quite a time trying to play FLAC files over the airplay due to the inability of Itunes to support it. If you don't use that format I guess it doesn't matter, but that is the majority of my music so I thought I would throw that out there. Aside from that issue I have heard good things about it IF people have other apple devices.

You keep all/most of your music in FLAC on your HD? That has to take up a ton of space, no? A lot of the live shows I download are FLAC but I convert to mp3 as soon as I get it. FLAC is nice but the difference, IMO, is negligible compared to the file size difference. But, I guess if you have a massive HD and/or not a ton of music, it's not a big deal. Just curious.

Yeah, it does but that is what external hard drives are for. I also try not to download songs I won't listen to. You lose a lot of information when you compress the file to mp3, but if you are just using some ear buds or cheap computer speakers it doesn't matter.
