RIP Tony Gwynn

San Diego Padres@Padres7m
We are terribly sad to say goodbye to our teammate, our friend and a legend, Tony Gwynn. Rest in peace, Mr. Padre.

Tony Gwynn died

Just got an alert on my phone about this. 54 years old.. Sorry to see him pass so young. He was a great hitter and all around player.

He nearly broke the .400 barrier. He hit .394 in 1994. Great player and ambassador to the game. Sorry for his family to lose him so young.

He was one of the all time greats. I know it is probably hitting the SD state players hard hearing this news.

I guess he lost his battle with cancer.

Rarely do I shed a tear when a sports figure or actor dies (last one was when Paul Newman passed), but I did when I read the alert on my phone about Tony. Always liked Tony. Great ambassador for the game we all love. He will truly be missed.

Just saw that. He was an amazing hitter. Cancer really is a equal opportunity disease.

The best pure hitter in my life time. RIP Tony Gwynn

RIP Mr. Padre. He was my favorite player growing up, even though I'm a Braves fan and have no connection with San Diego. That's who Tony was, one of the most likable and well-respected baseball players the sport has ever known. Not to mention the greatest pure hitter since Ted Williams.

Re: RIP Tony Gwynn

First, Maddux was convinced no hitter could tell the speed of a pitch with any meaningful accuracy. To demonstrate, he pointed at a road a quarter-mile away and said it was impossible to tell if a car was going 55, 65 or 75 mph unless there was another car nearby to offer a point of reference.
“You just can’t do it,” he said. Sometimes hitters can pick up differences in spin. They can identify pitches if there are different releases points or if a curveball starts with an upward hump as it leaves the pitcher’s hand. But if a pitcher can change speeds, every hitter is helpless, limited by human vision

“Except,” Maddux said, “for that [expletive] Tony Gwynn.”

I love Tony Gwynn. Greatest hitter of our era and just an awesome dude. I have nothing bad to say about the guy.

However, cancer sucks. Let this be a reminder that tobacco is not a good idea. Gwynn was known for having a wad in his mouth. Just don't do it kids.

First there was Casey Casem now Tony Gwynn. Even though I didn't know Casey Casem it's still sad. This has been terrible!

Re: RIP Tony Gwynn

sucks. I used to love watching him hit. So many of the good pitchers back then absolutely hated pitching to him. I heard Rick Sutcliffe on a Monday night broadcast once say he got to where he just threw him a fastball down the middle on the first pitch every time just to go ahead and give him his hit and move on to the next batter.

Awesome hitter , Tony was a big guy but kept his bat in the strike zone for contact instead of power ... I was a Braves and Yankee fan but loved to watch Gwynn at bat
