TheBigSpur (Free): Sterling Sharpe Makes First Return To Carolina

Pretty neat article about Sharpe making his first visit back to USC and Williams-Brice since playing there. Hopefully all our past players and student-athletes will feel at home at USC in the future:

This has been long overdue.

So that said, but why exactly has Sterling been absent from USC for the past 25+ years? I know we've tried to form a bond w/him, but he's neglected USC since I was a kid.

It was actually the other way around.

May be completely off base, but didn't it have something to do with King Dixon?

That was part of it.

How exactly does a school neglect a former player? He asks to use facilities for free and they say no? They don't invite him back all of the time for banquets and such to praise him? Seems to me that a former player, like any proud alumnus, should want to give back to his school without needing personal gain. Maybe I'm just not realistic.

Does he have a degree? Did the University strip it from him and ban him from any University related functions? I'd like to know what actually happened instead of just watching people try to sound cool on the internet because they think they're insiders.

we didn't try to form a bond with him. We distanced ourselves from all the players of the Joe Morrison era due to the steroid scandal. It takes time to convince people after 10-15 years of ignoring some of the best players in our history

Glad he came back, I held a little grudge with him for some time for not coming back and refusing to let anyone else use the #2. He means a lot to this school and we should mean a lot to him.

Knowing that, it was pretty dumb of the school to shun them for what coaches or trainers had them do. The steroid scandal doesn't embarrass ne, now maybe the Holderman Era does.

Lets just say when you are one of the greatest players of all time at a school and you come back to use the facilities and then have school officials tell you are that you are not welcome there and to please not tell anyone that you were ever associated with that university and then tell you if you come back that campus police will escort you off the property that can make you have hard feelings.

So, you don't believe in retiring numbers? Like...at all?

That's all I wanted to know. Thank ya much.

Is this just a rumor or has this story been substantiated in any way?

At the time it was a big rumor going around that I didn't know if I should believe or not but years later I talked to a former USC player that played with SS and he verified it and said that the university pretty much made a blanket policy about not having anything at all to do with players from that time frame. He said they were treated really badly by USC.

not who you are asking, but I think retiring numbers isnt a great idea. Retiring Jerseys yes, numbers no.

Not anymore. I think we should just retire jerseys, numbers can run out, especially if you were at a power school, like Bama or the old SoCal. Retire a jersey, make a statue or something, you can't have rights on a number though, if so I'm taking the number 7, it rhymes with my name.

Steroids was the game back then. My friends did them in HS and my Uncle played at NCST and that whole team (almost) was on steroids back in the 80's. He tells me the stories of his friends from Jawja, UNC, Wake etc. You get the point.

+1

Once a Gamecock, always a Gamecock.

Thank you Ray Tanner.

Wow....that's sad and disappointing. That era of players made a huge impact on making Gamecock football big time, even if it took a bunch of years for it to get there with the wins.

Let's hope a daughter is able to help heal some of the past...I'd love to see Sterling come of the field during a game with George and get some love from the fans.
