I already has, Coach Martin Martin, Thornwell, Stroman... We do not even know the seriousness of the injury at this point.

Now we do, unfortunately:

Official release:

July 1, 2014

COLUMBIA, S.C. - University of South Carolina head men's basketball coach Frank Martin announced on Tuesday that incoming freshman guard Shamiek Sheppard has suffered an ACL tear in his right knee and is expected to miss the 2014-15 campaign. Sheppard will undergo surgery for the torn ligament this week in Columbia.
"We feel awful for Shamiek with his injury," Martin said. "He has worked so hard to put himself in position to play at South Carolina. We look forward to supporting him through his surgery and rehab this season."

Tough blow for the program, even tougher for Shamiek I'm sure. Hope his surgery goes well and makes a full recovery.

Will this year still count against his eligibility?

He will take a medical redshirt and still have 4 years of eligibility.

That's good. Hope he bounces back.

I hope he does too. I think he can be a really good player in the garnet and black if he can recover back to 100%.

That's two recruits out of a four man class that may not even play this year. Sheppard is obviously lost for the year and who knows what the hell is going to happen with James Thompson??? He may never even step foot on campus.

Whoever is left standing at the beginning of the season needs to play lights out. We have to have a good season this year for the future of the program. I fully believe we have the talent right now to make a run at a 20 plus win season. IMO, that's what we need to start signing these quality players that are going to be on the board in the next couple of years.

Do we honor his scholarship? I'm assuming yes.

Keep in mind we only lost 1 consistent rotation player from last season. Martin wasn't going to play all 4 freshmen. Stroman or Blanton were always going to have the biggest roles if he goes deep into the bench.

I think the likely rotation is:

Johnson/Stroman
Notice/McKie
Thornwell/Steele or Blanton
Henry/Carrera
Chatkevicius/Kacinas

I think we'll see a very tight 8-9 man rrotation this season to start.

I expect this lineup to be slightly better than last year. Stroman will fun to watch develop. Our division is just too good to do anything amazing. If Frank takes this core to a tournament, he is a great coach.

I agree. But it's a shame half of our recruiting class may be gone before they ever got a chance to prove themselves.

We must win with what we have and we do have a strong team coming back if everyone stays healthy.

I disagree, Thompson and Sheppard would have been counted on to play and play early due to their size and reach as well as both have great defensive reputations. Only 2 of the 11 players you have listed are over 6'5"....If LChat and Henry get in foul trouble we have no bigs!

Well Sheppard is only 6'6 and sounds like he plays closer to LaKeem Jackson.

Henry and Chatkevicius just have to be a lot more mature in their play this season. Both of them were touted as guys that could score in the low post and need to live up to that bill.

I have heard that Henry was actually a player that was more used to starting off offensively facing the basket, with dribble moves/drives or popping for short jumpers, as opposed to getting his scores with his back to the basket. He wasn't a big body-banger in HS is what I read, and that's why he struggled as much as he did last season.

Hopefully he becomes more comfortable this coming season. I also read that Coach Martin has been really pleased with both Chat's and Kacinas' preparation this offseason as opposed to their previous. They apparently are carrying over their solid efforts at the end of last season into this offseason. I wonder if them staying in Columbia and working with the team - unlike last offseason when they both went home and worked with their national team(s) - has played a role in that. Can't help but think that it has...
