Stat of the Day: Kickoffs

Random fact for the day.

Over the past two years, Gamecocks lead the country in kickoffs out-of-bounds.

I think it's more personnel than coaching but I'm hoping we see a lot less of these this year.

That stat does not surprise me in the least. VERY frustrating. HOWEVER, I HAVE to add that after how poorly our kick coverage was WAY TOO OFTEN, I actually began to look forward to us kicking it out of bounds, because at least that way the other team started on their side of the field instead of ours ;-)

That kick to the corner is GREAT when you can pull it off, cause it narrows the field greatly, but you are correct in that we miss it a LOT.

We have not had good kicking teams since Succup and company.

PS. The kid we JUST got a commitment from - from AC Flora - looks to be a remedy for that...hopefully.

Re: Stat of the Day: Kickoffs

In 2013 we had 5 of 83 OOB (6%) with 43.37% Touchback
in 2012 we had 7 of 77 (9.1%) with 46.75% Touchback
in 2011 we had 1 of 71 (1.4%) with 8.45% Touchback
in 2010 we had 2 of 83 (2.4%) with 10.84% Touchback
Could it be that increasing the power behind the kick to get it out of play just makes it less accurate? I remember a few years back always wondering why we could not kick it deep in the end zone or out of the back of the end zone like other teams, but the last 2 years it seems like we are doing that more regularly now. I can remember opposing teams getting good field position off of kickoffs, but not so much now.
Maybe not such a bad thing to trade off controlling field position.

Hey, at least they're not returnable.

In 2010 and 2011 the kickoffs were moved back to the 30. In 2012, the kickoffs were moved back to the 35, resulting in more touch backs.

I think it's the specs Ard wears tbh.

But honestly I feel like more go out of bounds than would if the opposing team didn't review the film and get the strategy and purposely not go anywhere near a bunch of them thar kicks.

I recall a Georgia game a few years ago when I was screaming as loud as I could for us to kick it out of bounds.
