Ideally you would do your best to not have to fight at all. When every other option fails and you are forced to engage someone in a fight you want it to be as lopsided in your favor as possible and you want to inflict the maximum amount of damage possible in the shortest amount of time.

If you have exhausted all other options afforded to you to not fight and you are forced to then your intent should be to kill the other person because they obviously intend to harm or kill you or a loved one. Like I said above ideally you would do everything possible to find a way to not have to fight someone but if everything fails then that means it is serious and life threatening so in order to end that threat you need to incapacitate your attacker and most of the time that means ending their life.
