2013 O-Line: Pass Blocking Issues or Not?
After Spurrier's comments on the O-Line performance from the 2nd scrimmage, I couldn't help to think back to former USC O-Line coach John Hunt and the issues we had with run blocking during the 2005-2008 years.
We had 2 tackles last year that were 1st year starters...and that could explain the lack of protection Shaw/Thompson experienced in 2012. What learning curve/improvement should we expect...
Sacks Allowed Under Elliott
Another couple of factors from 2012 were: a) Shaw/Thompson holding the ball too long in the pocket, and not checking down to the 2nd or 3rd receiver in the pattern. b) Lattimore not back to 100%...OR...Lattimore out and no running game to keep Defensive lines honest versus the run...they could just 'pin their ears' back.
In fairness to Shawn Elliott - John Hunt's O-Line weren't exactly passing blocking juggernauts (save for '06 with Rice/McKinley as WRs)...in 2008 our QB's were sacked 39 times with little no running game to help balance the Offense.
I think Elliott is a great motivator who came from App. State with the promise to improve our running game woes & install the read option. IMO- he's also been a solid recruiter for Spurrier's staff.
All things considered, does Coach Elliott now have the reverse stigma that Hunt had by the O-Line not being able to pass block consistently?
More so, are we recruiting the right type of O-Line tackles that have the potential to pass block against SEC defenses?
