What gives us more trouble?
Been spending the last few days rewatching our games from last year, and thinking about the year ahead. I began pondering the following question:
Which is going to be a greater threat this year? A. A team with a great offense but a so-so defense or B. A team with a great defense with a so-so offense.
I began thinking about this while re-watching the Vandy game from last year. We were very lucky to pull that one out of the fire. Vandy was by no means an offensive juggernaut, but we really struggled against them when we were on O. Granted, Shaw was injured, but give Vandy credit, they never allowed us to get into a rhythm. Our two losses were against teams that certainly fell into the category of so-so offenses and great defenses.
Against the great offensive teams (I am including Clemson and Georgia), we blew them out of the water.
So, not trying to oversimplify, but last year, it certainly seemed like we struggled more against great defenses than against great offenses. The only real aberration to that was the Tennessee game.
Looking ahead to this season, for at least our first two games, we are playing teams that definitely fall into category A. In fact, we have several teams on our schedule that fall into this category. Granted, we don't know how strong UGa's D will be, but regardless, there will be plenty of inexperience. If we are able to contain UNC to under 3 TDs Thursday, I will feel very confident about the season ahead.
I happen to think the 2 toughest opponents on our schedule will be Vandy and Florida. Thankfully, both of those games will be at Willy B.
Maybe I am crazy, but I think our schedule plays perfectly to our strengths. If Spurticus is right about our defense being better, this might be a very special year!
