They used their power to raise entrance standards to try to continue to keep AA athletes out during the 60's. Of course, you talk to the revisionist ACC homers, and they say it is because of their commitment to academics, which is a load of crap. The standards went back down in the 70's when segregation was ended.
It's the ugly truth of the South back then, but there is no use in trying to lie about it. It is what it was.
