It wasn't just the south. I went to a baseball game at Fenway in the early 1980s when Jim Rice was on the Redsox. Judging by the names some Redsox fans were calling Rice, the racists in Boston put the racists in the south to shame. Massachusettes remained segregated long past the U.S. Supreme Court cases ordering the end of "separate but equal" in the south. They had race riots in the 1980s in Massachusettes when black folk tried to go to the "white" beaches. That is the ugly truth, stereotyping the south aside.
