Question about our SEC openers.
I was just thinking about how we will be opening our SEC schedule on the road, and that made me wonder something: how often have we opened conference play on the road?
UGA is usually the first SEC game for us, so logic would dictate that every other year we open at home, but that's not the case. There have been a few times when we have opened league play with another team (Vandy seems to be the choice often), and a lot of times, that game against a team other than UGA is on the road (see last year).
Anyway, I just find it interesting that we seem to start conference play on the road. Yes, I realize half of the teams must do it every year, but it seems like we do it often.
EDIT: FYI, this is what I found on gamecocksonline.com in the archives:
2001 - SEC opener at UGA
2002 - SEC opener HOME
2003 - SEC opener at UGA
2004 - SEC opener at Vandy
2005 - SEC opener at UGA
2006 - SEC opener HOME
2007 - SEC opener at UGA
2008 - SEC opener at Vandy
2009 - SEC opener at UGA
2010 - SEC opener HOME
2011 - SEC opener at UGA
2012 - SEC opener at Vandy
2013 - SEC opener at UGA
So, as you can see, beginning in 2001, we've only had THREE seasons where we started conference play at home. How many other teams have done that or worse?
Eat! Pugnant! Vincere! Removere asinum!
