I'd say 50s, 60s, & 70s up to the disco era.
1 Good music creates more good music. For instance the British Invasion of the early 60s: Beatles, Stones, Hollies, Searchers, Dave Clark Five, etc, etc. IMO creativity and competition makes for better products. The disco era was creative to start but I feel that it also created "the formula" so that music had to sound a certain way. I'll probably be villified but I think most all of today's country music sounds too much alike.
2. Yep. People want free stuff and don't consider downloading copyrighted stuff stealing. Plus why drop $15-20 for a CD with two good songs when you can buy just what you want now for a couple dollars/song.
