I'm also not opposed to expanding the student section, but how do you plan to do that? Take them all from opposing fans? Aren't we required to supply a certain amount of tickets for the visiting university?
I also don't believe you can take paying fans seats away and as much as students would like to say "I'm paying $40,000 for education so I deserve a seat" that's not the case. You're paying $40,000 for school to get an education. Has nothing to do with football games. Students pay an $86 a semester "athletics ticket fee" which is supposed to cover the costs of tickets to all sporting events.
I think the solution is to charge all students $50 a game (or whatever face value is) for tickets to football games. You will get the students that actually care about football and you wont have to expand. Problem Solved.
To the first question, put more seats in the north end zone.
To the other: Do all the other schools handle it that way? Sincere question, because we are talking about atmosphere here. And yes, the program needs money, but it also needs enthusiasm. One group has an abundance of enthusiasm but little disposable income.
