The game we should not have lost: Georgia
Yes, we should have and could have won this game, period. The opportunities where there, many times. We simply did not capitalize on them.
What went wrong:
-Never really pressured Aaron Murray the entire game. With the exception of two plays I vividly remember (the Clowney and Roberts sacks) Murray had plenty of time all game long.
-Could not stop the run game. Gurley rushed for 134 yards or so. They controlled the ground and the clock.
-Lack of defensive pressure and dominance along the front line. The defensive front looked lackluster and mediocre most of the game and allowed UGA's line to contain them the whole day.
-The Clowney Factor: .....Looks like there is something to what the experts are saying....for the second straight week we saw him gassed and out of breath at times.
-Allowed the "big plays" to happen. When Murray went long we blew the coverage.
-Never took advantage of creating turnovers. No one was interested in getting INT's and punching the ball out to cause fumbles.
**Notice, I did not say much of anything at all about the offense....
That is because our offense IMO played a good enough game to put us in a position to win, with the exception of Shaw's fumble, the O played and executed well. I did sometimes feel we went to the Shaw/delayed run a few too many times, however with this style of offense, that is what you get and it's part of it. We probably should've passed more, as this worked well against the UGA defense when we did especially late in the game.
All in all the main reason we lost is because UGA's O-line contained our D-line, never allowing much of any pressure to Murray and allowing Gurley to do as he wished and never stopping any big plays. We allowed the UGA offense to stay on the field too long.
So, for the first time in many many years, I can say our defense cost us the game. Whammy, you have some serious work to do. Hopefully this will be an "early season wake-up call" for those guys to go to work, make adjustments and find ways to be more competitive. Because in the SEC, as well all know, you don't have to have a great offense to win game, but if you don't have much of a defense, you are in BIG trouble.
