I wish this would just stop, no one forced them to sign the LoI, or the waiving of their rights to the University or NCAA for using their likeness. In the real world companies use their employees likeness for advertising, marketing, etc and those employees don't see a freebie. On top of an education that goes around 40k per year including room/board, etc totaling up to 160k over 3-4 years and if you are in the SEC the schools spend $163,931 per student athlete. Let's not forget the Universities have the right to waive the out of state tuition rates to instate tuition for out of state student-athletes. Roughly in the scope of college athletics 150k-200k a year per student athlete because of course it varies from school to school.
