Problems with defensive backs and linebacker is more than just "attitude"
Yes, I know this post is long so don't read it if that bothers you.
First, let me say that I hope this post isn't automatically put down as just a "sky is falling" post. People who know my posts know that I am usually considered a "sunshine pumper" because I always say trust the coaches and always believe we are going to win.
I wanted to clean out one of my dvrs tonight so I decided to delete all of the previous games from the season.
Before I deleted them, I went through and watched our defense play because I wanted to see if I could really get a good feel for what was going on. Watching all of our defensive possession back to back to back so to speak really gives you a feel for what is happening.
In a nutshell, our linebackers and secondary are just not very good right now. And I don't think it is just that they are young. Well, maybe some of the linebackers are just young, but that isn't the problem with the secondary. I honestly just think that compared to the past several years, our secondary just isn't that good. Put it this way, we have one particular starter in our secondary that I don't even think would see the field on most of the other top SEC teams.
Because of what the coaches have been saying, I was really hoping it was just poor communication and the players not getting lined up correctly. Well, I can say that is happening. Honestly, on about half of our defensive plays the linebackers are still looking at the sideline when the ball is snapped. I am not kidding either.
But while that could be a lot of it, there is also much more going on. Our guys are taking really bad angles and getting run over at the point of contact. Every running back we play looks like Marcus Lattimore when they get to our linebackers and secondary.
We just don't have any Gilmore's, Hollomans, and DJs in this defensive backfield. Hampton is a great player, but he isn't big enough to knock a guy on his ass. There are absolutely no Jasper Brinkleys in this backfield.
And while they may have speed, they are taking a lot of bad angles.
So why am I posting this? I am posting it because after REALLY watching the defense today and looking at it objectively, I don't think these are things that are going to improve over a bye week.
If our defensive line can get pressure, we will continue to be ok. But if we don't get great pressure, good QBs will carve us up. I hate to say that, but it is true. Think about Aaron Murray's' game against us. He has never looked good against us and he had one of the best nights of his career this time. I thought it was just communication issues mainly, but it really isn't.
I know UNC and Vanderbilt didn't have a lot of yards against us and that was the stat I was using to be very hopeful that things were still good. But if you really watch the games, you will see that our defensive line was just dominant for a lot of those two games. I don't care what any media guys have said about being gassed or whatever, our defensive line is the real deal.
But even in the UNC and Vandy games, when a RB or WR got into our secondary there was no DJ Swearinger in there to knock them back five yards.
I did a little exercise where I paused the dvr at 1st contact any time an opponent's player made 1st contact with one of our linebackers or defensive backs. The offensive player won that battle almost every time. By won the battle, I don't mean that he didn't get tackled. I just mean who was pushing who in which direction.
PS - Jimmy Legree is the exception in our secondary.
