1/3rd of the season in the books, our biggest concerns.....
4 of 12 regular season games (1/3rd of the season) are now in the books, and in my humble opinion, our two largest concerns are....
#1 - The defense has yet to find the ability to "gell"......we have talent, depth is ok (esp. on the line, yes we are a bit young at LB and secondary, I know). However, they can't put together a 60 min/4 quarter game yet. I don't see near the line penetration we've had the past two years. Clowney gets double teamed all the time or either the opposing team runs the play away from him to the other side of the field, but who is stepping up to help? I surely thought I would have seen more from Chaz at this point. This is disappointing and our largest problem. I don't know how well this Adams/Botkin thing is working out so far. Whammy needs to make some adjustments.....and quick. We need to find our identity here and figure out a way to get this team to play and execute more complete on defense and for a whole game. (P.S. – What happened to the “rabbit package”….???)
#2 - Ready to see a WR or two dominate and emerge.....Bruce has talent, sure. Would have been nice if Shaq would have helped the team out by making the trip this week. But no one has stepped up to be the "hey, throw it to me and I will catch it every time, guy". I know Nick Jones has done some good things, but sometimes when we heave one up to him or D. Byrd, I feel we are doing some kind of "let’s throw this up against the wall and see if it sticks" kind of play. What's happened to all of our slants and curls we once ran plenty of? I will take 7 or 8 yard passes all day over what we are getting right now. We're lacking in this department, and it's causing Shaw to run more than needed and losing the effectiveness of the zone read. Get the TE’s involved more!
On bright notes: O-line continues to do very well. Davis and run game is as solid as anyone; we just need something to compliment it so we don’t become predictable. Team looks in good physical shape, I don’t see overweight bellies on guys we used to see, from appearance everybody seems to be in overall good condition.
I hope we can “get it together”. If we do, we can run the table. If not, we could easily drop two or three more. Clemson is firing on all cylinders, however we have a team that can beat them, but if we don’t develop and find our identity especially on defense, they could have their way with us.
Am I wrong here guys?????
….until then, one game at a time……Beat UK!
