we need a nickel defense
i dont believe we've gone away from our base defense (back 7) at any point this season on an obvious passing down. not having guys like holloman, swearinger, and auguste limits the versatility we had last year.
i know the thread title is going to warrant a "we need a defense period" response, but this isnt about a cure all, this is about obvious pass situation defense. i dont believe we've gone away from base back 7 defense at any point this season. the thought process initially may have been because of scheme and the spur essentially being a nickelback position in our base defense, but it hasnt worked for whatever or a myriad of reasons on obvious passing downs. the spur position, the lb's aside from tj holloman, and the safeties just havent made plays in these situations.
we need to bring a 3rd corner on the field, or chaz elder and get a little more versatility than we currently have. something we did last year when were healthy with auguste starting in place of legree down the stretch was put legree at safety with brison on the obvious passing downs with swearinger in the slot. we've got to do something different at safety, lb, corner, 2 out of 3, or all 3. the other option in conjunction with some of the other suggestions is taking one of the true lb's off the field and putting marcus, brison, or even gurley in the box essentially playing the 2nd lb spot.
the other obvious thing is if teams are max protecting or keeping a tight end we've got to bring at least 5 people more often because too often clowney is the only guy bringing heat. the stunt worked for us on the holloman interception, but we have to try more pressures.
