Ignoring a lot of the other flaws in the tackles = production argument, the issue I have is that tackle statistics are just inaccurate as hell.
Take Luke Kuechly (you could say the same for Manti Teo as well) for example. The guy was a tackling machine, but there were a ton of plays where the announcers/scorer would credit him with a tackle for just being in the vicinity of the ball carrier, whether or not he actually made the tackle. You want a more recent example? Last Sunday in the Bills game, Kiko Alonso was officially credited with 22 tackles. People who actually charted the game said crediting him with 14 would've been generous.
