I'm hoping that would be me? Haha. I found this last night, and I couldn't be happier for the kid. I emailed The Chive last night and linked them to the video, and they posted it this morning, I was very happy to see it.
He got accepted into the Clemson LIFE program. It's basically a 2-year program for those individuals with developmental disabilities, and it allows them to learn necessary life skills to function on their own. Teaches banking and budgeting, social/leisure skills, employment skills, and the skills necessary to live independently. It's also selective, they typically enroll only 6-8 students in the program every Fall.
Students live in a 4BR apartment, and they're supervised by an on-site RA. Living skills (cooking, cleaning, etc) are taught in classes, and the RAs reinforce it as-needed. They're taught about the CAT buses for transportation, and are given supervised on and off-campus employment. They also have counseling available if needed, and are able to take advantage of fitness training, leisure activities, and interact with the rest of the student body.
If you remember earlier this football season, there was a special aired about David Saville, a special-needs student part of the Equipment Team. He's part of the LIFE program, and he's impacted the team and coaches as much as they've impacted him. This kid will have the opportunity to do the same, and I can't wait to see the success story from his 2 years at Clemson.
^ that's more about the program, for those interested in reading.
