I used to LOVE playing Chess. I played a lot in High School and with some
buds of mine right after HS. Pre-Internet / digital age, it used to be popular
to play Chess by mail. My best friend growing up, ended up going to
South Carolina and he and I played a few games by mail after he got
settled in. .... I stopped playing for several years, then when the
Net became really popular, I started playing again online with a group of
guys and had a great time. It's where I spent most of my spare time
right before getting into message boards. .... I quit playing because there
was the small group of guys I started playing with, who had about the
same skill rating and the games were very competitive and even. A couple
of those guys went from (scale of 100 to 1000) somewhere in the 350-400
range to near 1000 in few weeks. .... Turns out they were using chess
programs set at expert level to do their moves for them while we played our
moves "by the book" (ourselves). The game went sour for me on the net
and haven't played online since. .... No way to determine if you're playing
the person you're talking to or a program he's using. ... I'll only play face
to face if I play again.
