Default Reese Havens retiring from pro baseball

Reese grew up not far from me - was superbly talented beyond his years even back in elementary school. He had an amazing career in high school and at Carolina. I hate that the injury bug caught up to him as a pro player. Best of luck to him in his career post pro baseball.

Reese Havens, a former South Carolina star and first-round draft pick of the New York Mets in 2008, has retired from professional baseball, ESPN reported today.

Havens, 27, never made it to Major League Baseball despite being the No. 22 overall pick in 2008 after stellar careers at USC and Bishop England High School.

The oft-injured Havens batted .252 in 345 minor-league games over six seasons, with 43 home runs and 157 runs batted-in. Last season at Class AAAA Las Vegas, he hit .237 with one homer and eight RBI in 38 games.
During his career, Havens dealt with injuries to his elbow, groin, oblique, ribs and back.

Havens told WCIV-TV that he will be a coach at Bishop England.
