I HONESTLY believe that is the single biggest reason for the change in
Gamecock football to the better "pre Shaw vs during the past two and
a half seasons. Garcia, Smelley, Mitchell used to rely way too much on the
Number one receivers like Rice, McKinley, Jeffery and underused the rest
of the WRs and RBs. If you think back at what happened THE VERY GAME
that Shaw took over against UK, we started to see big pass plays happen
with guys like Nick Jones, Rory Anderson, Justice Cunningham, and even
more passes to underneath coverages, like Kenny Miles, Marcus Lattimore
and the other RBs / TEs. ... Spreading the ball around is the sign of a
QB who plays with his head, and not with his arm. Taking what is there
vs throwing it to the "go to" guy in tight coverage and hoping he'll make
another big play. Shaw took Phil Petty's kind of leadership to the next
level and utilized the better talent, and speed that Petty didn't have, but
tried to make do when he was the QB here...... Shaw was not "flashy"
nor did he put up unbelievable stats every year, but very quietly put
together record setting numbers for South Carolina Football when it was
all said and done. Steady, Smartly and workman like he ended as the
best that ever led a Gamecock offense.
