COCKYTALK SPRING PRACTICE REPORT: 4/8/14
Spring Practice 4/8/14: Practice Number 12
I didn’t get out there in time today to catch any of the one on ones, but got to see our Field Goal team going through their drills. Elliott Fry is still Mr Consistent hitting every attempt from every angle inside the 45. Punting for both Patrick Fish and Tyler Hull looked good today with fewer shanked kicks. I watched Jordan Diaz, David Williams and Connor McLaurin run several wind sprints and do about 20 minutes of agility drills. All of them seemed to be moving well at full speed. The healing process seems to be going well for Diaz and McLaurin, and David Williams’ hamstring doesn’t seem to be too sever. More than likely will not see any action Saturday being that he is projected to see a lot of PT this fall, and the Spring Drills are about over now. I doubt the coaches take the chance on re-injuring the hamstring there. Kane Whitehurst is still on crutches.
As I had expected, Damiere Byrd was back in regular uniform today running position drills and fielding punts and kickoffs. He didn’t see any reps in the game drills today though, but should be close to 100%.
Dylan Thompson again saw limited reps during Skels and Full Team. Made the most of it though by completing most of his throws and putting a couple in the Endzone when they ran the 7/7 and 11/11 from the Red Zone situation. He did telegraph one throw however that was almost picked off in the end zone. The other three QBs behind him didn’t fair nearly as well as the defense had an outstanding practice today and picked off Connor Mitch twice and Perry Orth twice. Even with the picks, Connor Mitch still had some outstanding plays during both the game situation drills thowing for three TDs and connecting for several others to move the chains. Perry Orth had one TD during the Skels with several nice completions (save the two picks). Brendon Nosovitch now running behind Orth and Mitch only saw one series of with the offense during 11/11, and did well with that drive. He wasn’t picked off, but had a couple of passes batted down against his intended targets. One of the picks of each QB (Orth and Mitch) were the result of extremely good defensive plays, but the others were passes that should not have been thrown by the guys.
Guessing about 90% of the reps today came from the guys below Shon Carson and Brandon Wilds. Guys like Devin Potter, and Rod Talley saw the majority of carries. Mike Davis got a couple of touches each in the Skels and Full Team, and broke off long runs from the few reps he got. Brandon Wilds was in on two series of downs during the Skels, and one series of reps in Full team. He attepted another pass off of a lateral from Dylan Thompson, but it was snuffed out before Wilds could throw the ball. The Defense has been burned on that play a few times this spring, and they are staring to read it now. Potter got the lion’s share of carries today. Did well for himself during the Full Team drills breaking off a couple of nice runs up the middle to move the offense out of the shadow of the goal posts. I didn’t see Carson touch the ball today in any of the drills. Not sure what’s happening there.
Wide Receivers / Tight Ends:
With Buster out for the remainder of the Spring, it became the Jarrell Adams show from the Tight End position. He and Kelvin Rainey each had good practices catching a few passes. Jacob August had a quiet day today not getting thrown to, and used primarily as a blocking TE on short yardage plays. Jody Fuller has had a good few days in a row of getting involved in the passing game. He got mores passes thrown to him today than any other day I can remember this spring. He finished up the week pretty strong last week, and had a solid performance in the scrimmage this past Saturday. The QBs are starting to look for #12 a little more now than they did a couple of weeks ago. I’m probably going to have to eat my words about Matt Harvey from last season. He’s not going to challenge anyone for a starting job, or may not see major PT in his career here, but the last two / three practices, he has put in some strong work as well. With his size, if he could just get a little more aggressive fighting through checks at the line, he could make a very good situational WR, especially in short yardage and Redzone Offensive plays. Got a glimpse of that today when he and Connor Mitch hooked up for a really nice play from just outside the 10 yard line. Connor laid the ball up high on a jump ball in the back right corner of the endzone, and Rico McWilliams who had the area was outmatched as Harvey went up high and got the pass, and was able to get a foot in bounds for the TD. Not a lot McWilliams could do there but applauded the effort and take a little trash talk from Matt as they walked back to the group. Pharoh Cooper had another good solid practice catching several balls, and a guy named Sean Odom who has been quiet the entire spring got about 4-5 passes throw to him today at times during the 7/7 and 11/11 and brought all of them in. Got some love from coach Spurrier Jr for his efforts as well as some slaps on the helmets from his team mates. Between all the good catches however, the Defense was able to bat down several passes and picked off four, and almost picked off a couple of others that the defenders dropped. Good showing by the wide outs, but a better showing by the defense this afternoon.
In The Trenches:
Didn’t see the first unit O/Line or D/Line up for many reps today. It was clear the coaches were working with the second unit and lower guys to get some work in for them heading down the stretch. Most of Dylans reps were taken behind the second unit line, and going against the second unit defensive front. SOME reps were given to the first unit, but they were limited to a few snaps before rotating out. Also noticed they were moving guys around even on the second unit. Brock Stadnik was moving back and forth from Right to Left Guard, and Cody Gibson who is the second Unit Left Tackle, was given several reps at Right Tackle opposite Mason Zandi (LT). Lots of reps for Deon Green and Phillip Dukes inside today, and Darius English was barely used at all, and watched Ced Cooper get the majority of reps as the strong side DE. Cedrick did really well for himself getting a couple of sacks, and several hurry ups, forcing the QBs to run a few times during the full team drills. That Lateral pass that was attempted late in the practice from Wilds was completely shut down by Gerald Dixon from his End position, running into the backfield straight towards Wilds while the ball was in the air. Wilds didn’t have time to set up, had to grab it and toss it almost in the same motion, causing the pass to go way high to Adams in the endzone. Overall, the defense was playing well today and were pumped up the entire practice.
As was the case with the Lines, the normal starters saw little action today while the guys behind them got a lot of reps and ran with it! One of Connor’s picks was made by Kyle Marini who saw the short slant intended for Fuller. Connor threw a rifle shot that was deflected up into the air by Marini, and he was able to locate the ball, pull it in, and take it the short distance to the End zone for 6. He was immediately piled onto by the defense who rubbed it in a little barking at the offense. Lots of different names / numbers in the second level defense today, who made some good plays when they were out there. Guys like Kyle
Fleetwood, Cedrick Malone, Mohamed Camara etc…. all getting some reps, and some pass deflections and good stops during the run attempts as well.
This was one area were a lot of the starters were in there and getting a lot of reps. Brison Williams had himself a DAY picking off two passes, one each off of Connor Mitch and Perry Orth. The pick of Mitch was a bad throw from him. He telegraphed it, and threw it back across the field to the far sideline intended for Jarrell Adams, but Williams saw it early and broke on it and made the pick look too easy. The pick of Orth was robbery !. Orth threw a really nice pass to Matt Harvey who caught the ball, but Williams reached around Harvey’s chest, and got a grip on the ball, and as the both fell to the ground, Williams ripped the ball out of Harvey’s grasp, and rolled over on top of Matt and came up with the ball somehow. The other Pick was a pass Orth threw to the endzone intended for Jody Fuller, but Chaz Elder (Think it was Chaz…number was hard to see), went up in front of Fuller and made a grab for the ball. Fuller tried to pull Elder away, but Chaz was able to come up with a nice one handed pick on the play, and he was Felling it, coming up shouting at the WR to “Go Sit Down….Go Sit Down”! Chris Moody had another near pick of Thompson, on what was probably his only bad pass of the limited reps he saw. He was locked onto Jerrell Adams all the way down the sideline, into the endzone, and lofted a Touch pass out in front or Adams that Moody was able to close on and smother. Had the ball in his chest, but couldn’t get a handle on it, to bring it in.
The Defense had the better of it again today, but there was some good plays here and there by the offense to at least make it respectable. It would appear from the number of reps given the QBs today, the coaches are narrowing the depth chart there heading into the summer. Right now, it looks like Thompson / Orth / Mitch are going to be the three deep with the battle for number two up in the air right now.
More Info Thursday Night.
