Cottonmouths are hard to identify correctly unless you ABSOLUTELY
know what you're looking for unless you get close enough to them to
see the eyes and heat pits. ... from a distance they could be a Brown
Watersnake. They mimic Cottonmouths and the pattern is almost identical.
Also, if you get close enough, the Cottonmouth will almost always curl up
and open it's mouth and show the white mouth without striking to warn
preditors to back off.
