Speaking of racehorses breathing......lower level trainers ($3-5 k claimers) used to stuff sponges up horses noses before a race preventing them from taking in a normal amount of air....therefore, since the horses couldn't breathe properly, they couldn't run very well. The trainers would get friends to bet on other horses in that race and enhance their chances of winning. They also did it after they claimed horses to make them run poorly...the next race the don't use the sponges, the hourse runs much better so the trainer sells the horse and makes money. Currently, vets are required to check every horse before every race to make sure the horse is fit to run.
