Lol, some of you are talking about not playing scared and others are talking about not wanting to go to Boone!

Put me in the creampuff camp. Yeah they're boring but our schedule is tough enough. The goal is getting to the playoffs and the tougher the schedule the less likely it becomes. Check out Clemmys schedule this year, CUPCAKE CITY. A&M and us are their only real games this year. Win just one of those and they're in the playoff.

Besides what's more important, some Fans being BORED, or our Cocks making it to the playoffs or better Bowls.
I think the answer is obvious.

This is the same kind of fan mentality that dominated for so long with recruiting. Fans used to quiver and collapse into the fetal position at the mere suggestion that we should maybe try recruiting outside of our normal footprint from time to time. Can't tell you how many times I was shouted down on that topic. Waste of time. Waste of resources. We'll NEVER get recruits from out west. But fans (most anyway) have evolved their thinking on that. Ryan Hilinksi says "hello."

Nobody's saying schedule a top-5 OOC opponent every season to start. But a 2 year home-and-home against a solid OOC opponent like Notre Dame would be great. It's a medium risk, high reward scenario. A loss would be disappointing but not all that damaging to the season goals. If you run the table on your SEC schedule, the loss would be irrelevant. A win, however, would be an unbelievable boost for the program on the national scene.

Yeah, the Clemson game is OOC, but it's far too regional...same state...so it lacks any national punch.

Only problem with scheduling home-and-homes against P5 teams (plus ND) is that they're usually done years in advance; there's no telling how good an opponent will be by the time the first game is played unless it's Alabama. Even scheduling teams within our regional footprint isn't an open-and-shut case. For example, UNC was originally supposed to make a return trip to W-B in 2010 after we went to Chapel Hill in '07 (it was delayed until 2013). I agree that if we lose to a very good opponent OOC early in the season - especially at a neutral site such as Atlanta, it's not a big deal - and the CFP selection committee has also seen it the same way.

As far as scheduling G5 or FCS teams - no matter how good these teams may be - it's not usually for records as we have a tendency to beat most of these teams (no more Citadel for another 20 years, please... lol); it's mainly about money. The money paid out to these teams finances a good portion of their athletics budget; for many FCS-level teams that's their entire budget for the year. It's a bit strange to have to make a trip to App State for a ball game but I think in this case it was a 2-for-1, meaning App State would travel here twice for the one time we go to Boone (I hear there's good breweries in the area). I don't think it's without precedent that a P5 school travels to a G5 school for a ballgame; didn't NC State play ECU in the other Greenville last year?

On the subject of Clemson, the game could have national implications if/when both teams are ranked as high as they were (or are, in the case of that school from the Upstate). My guess is it will happen sooner rather than later if recruiting continues on its recent hot streak. Even then, Clemson can't stay nationally relevant forever.

The Hilinski recruiting is paying dividends right now, as we're in the running for more players from out west, with Hilinski himself helping to promote our school. We as a fanbase should be encouraged by that, and the fact that our coaching staff recruits very well.
We all we got; we all we need. That, and this little thing called hope.

Yeah, no real benefit for us here. I'd rather play a middle of the road team from a power 5 conference, at least that would boost the resume a bit.

I wonder how all those who want harder schedules would feel the year we lose to Atlanta in the SEC championship by a point but get left out of the CFP playoffs because we lost to a team we didn't have to play but willfully signed up for, like Va Tech or the like, knowing we could've played coastal again?

Meanwhile, Clemson has one L to USC, wins a down ACC, beats three losers in nonconference and goes to the playoffs again?

Yeah, playing APP is really really dumb.

We play Clemson and the SEC every season. We don't need any more challenge. If you want to play a fluffer in CLT from time to time to fly the flag down the road, that's fine, but other than that...no thanks.

How about this for a non-conference schedule?
Open the season Thurs. night S. Carolina vs Arizona St at Dallas Cowboys Stadium. Then home and home's with Northwestern and Texas, and with Clemson you have scheduled games against the Pac-12, Big-12, Big-10 and ACC..all are winnable games and now the weakest game on the schedule is a conference game.

I posed the question at one point that if you were able to write the teams schedule who would you want to see them play and several responses I got were; FAU ( or some other team we'll kill) or FIU (or some other team we'll kill) and I have to wonder where some people got the idea that a win is not a win unlessor a game isn't fun unless you win by at least 60 points. if you are expected to win by 50 points then why play the game? SORRY GUYS but I like the drama of not knowing whose going to win.

If you push for that then you also have to lower the bar for number of wins that is acceptable for a HC. If you're taking away cupcake games then 6-7 win seasons will need to become acceptable for you.

App State is a quality OOC opponent. They have the highest win percentage overall of any team around here (clemson, USC, Wofford, furman, coastal, citadel, UNC, NCSU, etc.) South Carolina is 8-1 all time in the series. Played from 1972 to 1977. Half those were close games and app state got their only win of the series in Columbia 1975 with a score 39-34. They played again from 1985-1988, with a close game in 1985 that we hung on to win 20-13.

From a scheduling standpoint it’s a lose-lose situation. You win it’s no big deal, and you lose and t looks bad. The only benefit is experience eagainst a quality opponent. Their defense can match up with the best of them and coaches always put them in the right situations.. Penn State runs an offense that’s very hard to stop and they defended certain schemes very well in that game.

I like the series with App State, I would like to see South Carolina play even more North Carolina schools. There’s no reason to have a losing record to Duke who South Carolina played frequently from the 1930s thru the 1990s. So even that series out some.

The very definition of a trap-game.

Definitely. Ask Michigan in Ď07, and Penn State this season (they won in OT).

Funny that everyone is absolutely crapping their britches over the thought of us adding a decent OOC opponent to start our season from time-to-time but now want us to add VaTech or WVU to replace the Marshall game.

..Why are you crapping your britches about our schedules. This is the first time in a while we have not had a NC Stayut or a nawth carolina or East Carolina on the schedule. We have to play a SEC schedule so no need to over load your schedule.
I mean think about it, your team plays the likes of GT, BC, Cuse, dooke and wake. Your team is the one that needs to add one more P5 team on your schedule not ours.
