she also threatened his job, saying he would never ref another match of hers....all because he wouldnt apologize for penalizing her for cheating... I mean its nuts to blame him. absolutely nuts.

Also apparently this official has a history of being very strict...to both genders

One of the reasons that I have never favored Serena is because of the attitude she's always displayed in her matches. I like Venus far more because she has always had a better attitude.

Serena has a pretty long history of berating, disrespecting, and even treating line judges and chair umpires in threatening fashion. I strongly oppose that.

The fact that "it's done all the time" in tennis is entirely besides the fact: if coaching from the stands during GS matches is against the rules and you're caught doing it, then you have nothing and nowhere to cry to if you get penalized for it. If you get away with it without penalty, then consider yourself fortunate and walk away.

I do not know exactly what the chair umpire said to Serena when he assessed the 1st penalty for coaching - did he say "cheating"? I do not think so. Serena IMO attached the notion of "cheating" to the issue. It is against the rules - does that then make it "cheating" if it's done? It is also against the rules to smash your racket onto the court so hard that you destroy it, and without argument to any degree, Serena smashed her racket which warranted the 2nd penalty, a point penalty. So by logic, by smashing her racket, did Serena not "cheat" there, just as much as cheating is done by receiving coaching from the stands? But she said that she'd rather lose than cheat....

So unless the chair umpire specifically said "cheat" which I don't think he did, why would Serena even bring it up in the first place?? It's not a point of cheating or not - it's a point of violating a rule that is in place, which according to the umpire Serena did. Serena attached the notion of "cheating" to it herself.....

Now, the final penalty which cost her a game of calling the umpire a "thief" could IMO have been let go, but then it also didn't have to be. Serena has again had a long history of rudeness and even of a hostile nature towards the officiating crews of her matches when things go against her, and IMO the first 2 penalties were definitely warranted. Male tennis players get penalized all the time right up to the top players - the turning point was when McEnroe was expelled from the Australian Open in the 90s for complaining too much and long.

The WTA is being forced by a top women's player to take her side in this case, but IMO she warranted the penalties, and to be truthful was well on her way to losing the match anyways....

But the USTA is not taking her side, backing the chair, and already assigned him

Ref was in the right. She was receiving coaching, which often happens with her, during the match. Then she slammed a racket. Something the same ref has penalized men for a number of times. Then she sat there and verbally abused the man and walked off by calling him a thief loud enough for the audience to hear. Afterwards, she fake cried trying to get sympathy from one of the judges, who happened to be a female, while citing that it would not have happened if she was a man. There are rules and when there is blatant disregard for them, then the chair umpire is well within his rights to assess penalties.

What did the line judge do to warrant a threat?

Called her for a foot fault on a second serve at 15/30 which put the match at Match Point.

Maybe Serena said she was gonna put that foot up her nether regions and the line judge considered it a death threat

I thought it was ironic that a woman who’s success comes from being built like a man claims sexism.

I don’t. I misread the question answering the question what caused her to make that threat. My bad.

As for Serena, I thought she acted abhorrently and very selfishly. For Ramos to be accused of sexism and racism over a mere coaching violation is ridiculous. I’ve been a fan of Venus’ almost since she first turned pro in the mid 90’s but I’ve never been able to get on board the Serena bandwagon. These two sisters make be close but they’re complete 180s temperamentally.

I didn't want to quote your whole post since it was long, but you got me thinking about a youtube channel I saw the other day. It's some guy that works in a convenience store and he uploads videos of people stealing with commentary. He calls them out in the store and they always get so mad, claim they would never steal, threaten to beat him up, etc. They get defensive because they are embarrassed and know they're wrong. Feel like that applies here too.
