Default Official 2019 Atlanta Braves Thread

The 2018 season is over and the Braves got the offseason leading up to the 2019 season cranked up with two free agent signings today.

Brian McCann is coming back to the ATL on a 1 year deal for $2 million:

Josh Donaldson has been signed to a 1 year deal for $23 million:

Will be interesting to see what else Alex Anthopoulos has up his sleeve this offseason. The Braves still would like to get another OF bat, some help for the bullpen, and possibly move Teheran and add a quality arm to the rotation.

If Donaldson returns to pre injury form, this will be a huge acquisition! A big bat at 3rd that hits for average. McCann will help. His leadership in the clubhouse is premium. The Braves need to pry DeGrom away from the Mets. They are wasting the best pitcher in MLB!

Hope we build on last season’s success. Need to get some quality pitching.

Dansby will have enough slumps and injuries to keep Camargo busy. He'll also cover 2nd and 3rd back up roles.

Or, he can be a good trade piece for a pitcher.

He has experience elsewhere in both the infield and outfield. I think the Braves just went after a guy they wanted and will see where the cards fall. I like Camargo, but like getting Donaldson more. Camargo could either get dealt or moved (temporarily?).

I agree. Dansby has extended hitting slumps that tank the lineup. I say keep Carmargo

That's a big if regarding Donaldson. He's on the wrong side of 30, has gotten calf strains the last 2 seasons, and had "dead arm" last year. To me, that doesn't bode well for his future in the game. I hope I'm wrong and he lives up to the contract though. I never mind eating crow when a player on a team I pull for outplays my expectations.

Iíd bet he gets at least 400 PAs and plays like 4 days a week at different places. I think the Braves want to rest guys more. He can play every position except C and CF. Hopefully keeps guys healthy and will fill in full time of someone goes down or Dansby canít get right.

Itís low risk high reward. 23M feel like a ton of money but the Braves paid 21M last year for Adrian Gonzalez to not play for them. If they even get 75% of what he was itís a steal

    Braves re-sign Nick Markakis to a $4MM 1 year deal with a team option of $6MM or a $2MM buy-out for the 2020 season.

    https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2019/...-markakis.html

Still some payroll flexibility to make one or two moves to add some help in the rotation/bullpen or another bat.

Not the big splash RF people wanted but if it allows the FO to go get another high end starter or pen guy then itís a good move. Nick can be a good piece for this team but he needs to play 100ish games not everyday.

Wow, the Mets and Phillies look good (kills me to say that) and the Braves seem to be floundering a bit. It's still early though.

The stadium was absolutely beautiful. Makes Turner Field look like a steaming pile of you know what. I was in section 240, which is second level on the third base side looking right at the middle of left field. From looking around, I really don't think there's a bad seat in the house. Thought the fan experience was good. Didn't walk through the whole stadium to see everything though. When my phone charges up, I'll post some of the pics I took tonight.

As for the game, they won 11-7 with Markakis and Donaldson hitting solo shots. Top 5 of the lineup all had 2 hits a piece and all position starters except for Alex Jackson got a hit. I thought Newk was going to have a good game. He got through the first on 7 or 8 pitches, then it just fell apart for him in the 2nd. Touki Toussaint, just called up from Gwinnett, gave 6 excellent innings in long relief. He had some filthy stuff. I think he hit 94 mph on his fastball a couple of times and it sat at 91-92 for most of the game. He had an absolutely filthy splitter that went 86-88 and just had the bottom fall out. Made a few hitters look really bad on those and wound up with 7 K if I'm not mistaken. If he can keep that up, he's going to be really good.
