For 5 months. Hardly enough time to get a good sense how he does at a non-military institution.

What's the difference? Running both types of institutions is predicated upon the fact of establishing relationships with superiors (the gov/Bot), contemporaries (other school presidents) and those under your stead (the faculty/staff and students).

The best leaders have three qualities: 1. Technical Skills, 2. People Skills (Persuasion, diplomacy and affability), 3. Conceptual Skills (Vision, strategic thinking and courage). Military service teaches these things in spades. So in your mind in which one of these qualities is he deficient? Where's your evidence that he's deficient in that skill or is it just insecurity with a previously unknown commodity?

But more than that, the best leaders are transformational, that is they generate awareness of a group's purpose and mission and gets employees (and in this case students as well) to see beyond their own needs and self-interests for the good of the group. This concept is the basis and baseline for all "military" leadership theory. If this is not a quality you want in USC's new president, then what do you want?

He was hired in January as Special Counsel to the President and interim CFO.

I don't see why people think that it's so different to be honest.

so someone "who's been in academia their entire career" just means they are more qualified for this position.

Yes, and they were sanctioned resulting in the loss of federal funds they would have normally received. Also, became the butt of many jokes, especially from Gamecocks.

All I can say is if he oversees an athletic department here like he did at Army, we are in for some rough years.
If he was, which he is not, it would be a vast improvement over what we have had the last few years.

I though that by the totality of my statements, I'd already made myself clear on this,

but I'll spell it. I was speaking for myself, your view might be different and that is also OK. ..

In my mind, someone who's been in academia their would be most quality to TEACH which is entirely different than to LEAD. So therefore, my original thesis stands. PERSONALLY, I would much rather be LED by a person with a military background than an academic.

Maybe he will be the best when all is said and done but the problem is, did we try to go out and try to find the best President for our University?

    No. No we did not.

Maybe we are "Old Carolina" afterall.

I think Lt. Gen. Caslen wil be just fine.

How do commanders build the necessary trust and the appropriate command climate in decentralized operations? How can we have these conversations?

Donít get the hate on army athletics

    They went 11-2 last year
    10-3 the year before
    8-5 the year before that
And currently on a 3 game win streak against Navy

are you 100% certain of that? It is not too hard to imagine that something shady was going on behind the scenes when you consider the fact that all of the "finalist" (including Caslen in my opinion) had deficiencies in their resume and that Caslen appears to have some sort of relationship with the Trump who is basically responsible for making McMaster governor. Why would McMaster push so hard for Caslen considering that he had apparently never met the guy?
