Scoreless in top 6th. Parker pitched a hell of a game, but we haven't given him any run support with 5 men in scoring position thus far (USC-U has had 0). Bridges is now in for Coyne, who pitched 5.0 innings, with 3 hits allowed and 6 strikeouts, no walks. IMO, his best outing all season, as he hadn't gone longer than 3 innings until tonight....

So far our pitching has answered the call tonight. Our bats.....not so much. Hopkins, Eyster, Berryhill, and Olson - our most experienced batters this season and the meat of our lineup - are a combined 0 for 10 tonight. Clarke, Beamon, and "Never" Neville are a combined 4 for 8. It's always something, apparently....

And Hinson makes it through the 8th. Still scoreless headed to B8. C'mon TJ!

The Upstate pitcher has been strugging so Olson swings at the first pitch with the go ahead run at second. On to the 9th - still scoreless!

Top of the 9th, score still 0-0.

I gotta tell ya, I can't possibly think this is at all good news for Coach Kingston and Coach Meade, and definitely NOT what they were hoping for, before the game tonight. As thin as our pitching staff is, if this goes to extra innings, it only further harms our chances of having anybody fresh enough to effectively pitch this weekend. A blow-out loss to USC Upstate right now would be a better scenario over an extra-inning pitching duel......

Don't get me wrong, the pitchers have performed fantastically, but we need to help them out with the bats.....

We're in trouble here, in top 9th inning. Bases loaded by USC-Upstate with only 1 out.....

BIG strike-out swinging by Hinson gets the 2nd out.......

HUGE strike-out swinging AGAIN, for the 3rd and final out!! Great job, Gage!!

Still 0-0, to the bottom 9th. Let's walk it off here, guys!!

    Bottom 9th, 0-0....

Clarke doubles - he JUST missed ending it with a homerun - to lead off! He's replaced by pinch-runner English. Clarke was our catcher, filling in for Berryhill who was DH-ing tonight...

Allen flies out for out #1....

Jonah Beamon has been one of the bright spots in the line-up this year and good move by Kingston to put a speedy guy on the bases.

5'6" gettin' it done with a walk-off RBI.

    USC 1-0 Final.

It's hard to get too excited about a 1-0 victory over Upstate, but it was nice to see a few new guys stepping up. Kudos for Coyne (5 IP, 3 H, 6K, 0 BB!, 0 R), Clarke (3-4 w 2 doubles), our bullpen (Bridges/Sweatt/Hinson: 4 IP, 2H, 1 BB, 6 K, 0 R), and Beamon (2-4 with the game winning RBI).

USC Upstate's Trey Van Der Weide almost pitched a complete-game shut-out on 113 pitches. We used 4 pitchers on 136 pitches.

Sure, we're a bottom-tier SEC team right now, but you have to respect Van Der Weide's performance last night, too.

Can you imagine how differently our season would have gone with just one pitcher who could do that consistently on our pitching staff? With just one guy who could go the distance every now and then and get the win?

I can't tell why you quoted me on this since my post was about really nice performances by Parker et al., but sure - it would be great to have a consistently good starter. As rough as this year was for the staff, there are some really good pieces coming back, along with some returns from injury, and (potentially) some good incoming pitchers. Even some of the younger guys who were inconsistent and had some rough outings (Sweatt, Harley) also showed flashes of promise, so hopefully they can make a big step forward during the off season. BTW - unlike some on CT, I'm far less worried about the staff next year than our hitting.

Not trying to call you out; was just using it to compare the two pitching staffs in this game.
