    Default 2020 P Commitment - Kai Kroeger

6-3, 190 Punter from Lake Forest, IL, Kai Kroeger was visiting USC today and was on commitment watch, and he pulled the trigger! Kroeger, the No. 2 rated Punter in the country for the 2020 cycle per Kohl's Kicking, had interest from LSU, Illinois, Indiana, Penn State, and Washington State, but only South Carolina offered him a scholarship.

Kai is a very highly rated kicker/punter for the 2020 class. He's called a "5-star kicker", although special teams' specialists rarely get rated highly by the online services. But this is a great addition to the class, and another in a long line of quality punters for the Gamecocks program! Coach Muschamp and staff acknowledged this by offering Kroeger a scholarship for football, making Kai the 15th commitment to the 2020 class....

Rated the No.2 Punter in the Country by @KohlsKicking, Kroeger has been kicking punts of 60+ yds with regularity this off-season. This is what Kohl's Kicking says about Kroeger:

"Kroeger is a long-time Kohl's camper who showed well again this spring at the Kohl's Midwest Showcase Camp. He won the punt competition on the cold day by hitting a ball that went over 60 yards from the L.O.S.. Kroeger is also very good at rolling out and hitting punts. He is prototypical size and hits the most consistent spiral in the country. He checks off a lot of boxes with regards to work ethic and composure under pressure. He may be the most game ready player in the 2020 class. Kroeger is a D1 scholarship punter!"

For those that do not follow the vagaries of recruiting, he will (probably) wind up as a 3* that will bring down our average star rating. Not because he is not talented, but because kickers have a ceiling of 3*.

Obviously, an accurate/big-legged placekicker, or a punter that can hit 40+ yards with good hang time, is a huge weapon that can improve a football team. But they are not sexy, and the services do not waste stars on them or put them on the Top 100/Top 250 lists. No worries, he is a great pick-up. He also looks to be athletic, so he should be able to add a little muscle and make tackles on punts (if needed).

I'd probably be more excited about signing a #2 placekicker though... but as long as we get one next year we should be good.

    Close!

"(Alex) Herrera attended the 2018 National Invitational Scholarship Camp and made a total of 36 points on FG's. His FG's might be top 3-5 in the country. Herrera does need to continue to develop as a kick-off specialist to compete with the top five players in the country, but considering he is new to kicking/punting it is very possible. Herrera has proven multiple times he is a great player and we expect him to have a big senior season." From: https://kohlskicking.com/player-profiles/alex-herrera

Averaged slightly over 40 yards a punt as a Jr. That's nice. Give him a couple of years to add on muscle, and he could be a nice weapon.

I do not disagree with your post at all, but it's kinda funny: it was explained many times before what the star ratings are supposed to represent:

2* or lower: not perceived to be Div. I caliber - should be more suitable for lower division levels

3*: Div. I caliber prospect - may require a red-shirt year or more to develop, but could develop by the time they are red-shirt juniors into solid contributors and starters, and by the time they are seniors, could develop into conference leaders and NFL caliber player

4*: higher level Div. I caliber prospect - could still require a red-shirt, but impact team quicker, perhaps contending for starting position as a red-shirt freshman or sophomore, and be a conference leader and NFL-caliber player by the time they are red-shirt juniors.

5*: highest level of Div. I caliber prospect - could be college-ready immediately, and impact team in first year at college level, requiring no need for red-shirt year. Could be conference leader and NFL-caliber player by time he is a sophomore, definitely as a junior, and not need a senior year of college but is able to leave early and be a high NFL draft pick.

So, based on this rating system, if a kicker/punter is considered college-ready by the kicking "experts", and able to impact a college team's special teams as a freshman - like Kroeger is being described as being by Kohl's as an example - then why not rate him as a 5*, or at least as a high 4* prospect?? Just kinda hypocritical I guess, but you're right above: kickers & punters do not generate subscription revenue for them.....

Rated as a 2 star today. Pretty bogus if he is really considered a top 5 at his position.

Reason #12,358 why stars do not matter. Or at least that much. 247 has 12 kickers listed, the top 5 are 3* and the rest are 2*. They have 3 punters listed, all 2* - the #1 Punter is none other than Kai Kroeger.

So we get a dangerous weapon that can punt for 4 years - who cares if he brings our star average down?
