![]() Since the coaching carousel is turning right now and it's a big topic of who will be where, it got me thinking. Spurrier will be 69 in April. I believe he told Connor Mitch that if he came to Carolina that he would be the head coach his whole career here. I know that could be as long as 4 years away and Spurrier has said winning here has rejuvenated him. I know it's still way too early to predict a next head coach here and I'm all for focusing on now and enjoying the HBC while he's here.
That being said, with Strong going to Texas and James Franklin most likely at a new school maybe this off-season next at the latest. Who are some guys ya'll are looking at as our next potential coach? Do ya'll think it will be a young on fire coach that can recruit, a guy with Carolina ties or an established coach or a mixture? Who do ya'll want and why? |

![]() When I first started watching football in high school, I became a Florida fan because of their style of play under Spurrier. I quit liking Florida under Ron Zook and then became a South Carolina fan when Spurrier came. I can't imagine liking a football team that's not coached by Spurrier.

![]() A guy I'm going to be FOLLOWING is Matt Wells. Utah States head coach. First year there he goes 9-5. He's relatively young as far as coaches go at 40 years old. He's from Columbia too. Not saying I want him but seeing as how it will be a while before Spurrier hangs it up (hopefully with a couple SEC championships and a National title too with any luck lol) it can't hurt to pay attention. I would think that the Athletic department is keeping notes at least on future prospects.
Personally I would love to get a coach that has proven he can be a head coach but can also spend 10-15 years here (which is very rare in today's age unless you're successful). I'm not a fan of Stoops. He can recruit yes but he hasn't proven to me that he can win consistently against the big, physical teams. Maybe he just turned a corner with the win over Bama. It would have to take him going to a NFL team for him to come here because I can't see him leaving Oklahoma for us. He seems to have issues with the SEC anyway, maybe it's jealousy because he wants to coach in the league. It would be a good get though, I can agree with that. |

![]() Larry, just my opinion here; but if your fandom is conditional then you should just quit now. I'm a Carolina fan, the win loss record has no bearing on that whatsoever.

![]() Lol dude. Two thoughts on this comment. 1. I totally respect your honesty. Way to keep it real. 2. Never in my life did I think we'd be good enough to have bandwagon fans. I can't stand people that like, as an example: duke basketball and fsu football. I've had to watch navy gams and coppin state games my whole life and band wagoners tick me off. But I do like that we are getting so good that the leaches are starting to live off our success. That to me says the culture of the program has totally changed. I say keep rockin ur Carolina gear man the more fans the better.

![]() With what coach Spurrier has done here, I'm sure Dr Pastides and Ray
Tanner have pretty much assured him that he's got a job here as long as he wants to coach. With the way Spurrier has looked and sounded at the end of the season the last three years, I'm positive he'll stay here and try to win an SEC Title at SC before he hangs it up for good. Also, the overall SEC Win record (by Bear Bryant) is now within his grasp as long as his health is good. He may want to try to get that brass ring too. As for the question posed in the OP, I'm not even going to entertain or speculate on it right now because we have one of the best coaches in the country running the program at South Carolina, and one of the best that has ever coached in the SEC. I will say that the comment as to "Hot Young Coach" at the time he does decide to hang it up ....... I've seen members of this board and other fan sites speculate on getting "then hot coach" ..... A few years back when members of this site wanted Spurrier to step down after the 7-5 season of 2008 and the loss to Iowa, everyone wanted either Gary Peterson or Mike Leech. Where are those two standing now after 5 years in the National Eye ? ... They were on EVERYONE'S short list for a couple of seasons when they were "Hot". Same goes for other sports as well. We hired a "hot, young coach" in the Basketball world a few years back by the name of Darin Horn..How'd that work out ? ...... Again, I'm not speculating at all because it's a non factor in any of the admin or BOT right now. It's not something they OR us need to worry about. I'm sure when the time is near for Coach Spurrier to leave, He himself will sit down with Ray Tanner and the BOT members and add his imput as to who might be best suited to take over the program, and they will come up with a short list of names and go after them at the right time.... as for now, we have a coach who is still building this program, and who the next guy in, is not even a concern of mine right now.

![]() Bob Stoops. He'll go to Cleveland, realize he is not cut out to coach in the NFL when he is shown the door by the Browns and will come back to the SEC to take over for his close friend and mentor. All the media coverage will draw the parallels between his path and HBC's thru Washington.

Ohio State finished 11-2, and people want coaches on that staff fired. USC went 11-2, and we're asking if we can clone ours. Coaches want that ability to win big, but without the stress of maybe getting fired for not winning a ring every year. And USC offers that, along with nice weather, low cost of living. I truly think within 10 years USC will have a couple SEC titles and a National Championship. Its a perfect storm brewing. |

![]() Well, look at this. Bobby Bowden coached until he was what, almost 80? Paterno too.
And Bowden was not in great shape, didn't exercise much. Paterno was fragile and frail and didn't stay active much. Spurrier is still lifting weights, golfing, joking with reporters, taking jabs at his rival. Hell, this man could coach another 10 years at USC if he wants. Seriously, would anyone be shocked if the man put on a jersey and started throwing the scout team passes in practice? He's a legend. As a USC fan, I just cant believe how fortunate we are that he came here. I, too, loved him at Florida, and to have him here is just awesome. But, when he does leave one day, he'll leave a program that is on par with the top SEC teams as far as recruiting, facilities, etc. He has shown you can win big here, and do it without the insane stress to win you see at Bama, Texas, Ohio St, etc. USC will get another legend to come, or, lure a top young candidate. Michigan State's Mark Dantonio maybe? Hes a former Gamecock. Bring him home haha. |

![]() Guys, you're missing the point. I'm not asking how long he will stay. I'm simply posing a question for the fun of discussing it, who follows arguably our best coach ever? More accurately who do you want to follow him?
As long as he can get talent in here and develop them and enjoy it I'll be fine if he does stay for another 10 years. |

It's kind of pointless to discuss who should replace him if we expect him to leave in 4-5 years because the landscape of college football coaching will be much different. A better question would be if Spurrier were to walk away today, who would we get to be our coach. I have to agree that Stoops is someone to watch in the future. He's got a great rapport with Spurrier and seems to like USC. As for how long I think Spurrier will be here...I think a lot of it is dependent on his success. If he realizes he's starting to lose it and we start losing games he will walk away before we need to "push him out". As long as he keep winning like he's winning now then I think he's got a solid 5 years in him. He's said he doesn't want to coach til death.
