Default No More Excuses...

Let me preface this by saying, I love everything Spurrier has done for us. Thanks to Spurrier we pretty much "started from the bottom now we here". From this point forward though, there should be no more excuses for lack of hardware. No more we should have done this or that.

I'm not saying we have to win every game we play. Sometimes you're just not the better team. What HAS to stop is losing games EVERY year to teams we shouldn't.

2010: Kentucky loss. Embarrasing considering what we did the week before. Had the east not been so down that year, that loss would have cost us the east as well.

2011: Auburn. No excuse. That team was bad. We were the best team in the east that year and we gave the division away with that loss.

2012: Florida. Some people may disagree since it was at the swamp, but there is no excuse for the way we played that game. I was there and that was the most pathetic performance I have seen since clemson 08. That Florida team might have had a good record, but we gave the division away AGAIN with that performance.

2013: Tennessee. Embarrasing. Terrible performance, terrible coaching, terrible clock management. Once again we pissed away the SEC east.

With all that being said we have had bright spots. How can one complain in 2011 when we win the most games ever in a year? How can one complain in 2012 when we repeat it? How can one complain in 2013 when we finish #4 in the nation? You simply can't.

But that's why I create this thread. There are no more excuses. Yea we lost to Tennessee BUT we finished #4. Well take a look at that. That is the 2 teams playing for the National Championship, the Rose Bowl winners, and then us. We are RIGHT there. The past 3 years only Alabama, Oregon, and Stanford can match our success. But Bama just had a disaster of a season at 11-2, same for Oregon. Stanford won their conference, but they could have had much more.

There are no more firsts for the program except the obvious. Its time to get it done from start to finish. No more "yea we lost this but at least we did this for the first time". No more one game where we look like a shell of ourselves. No more terrible coaching decisions in key moments.

NO MORE EXCUSES

Really? Dang... I agree with the OP tho

After all we have done, the only thing left to do is bring home the hardware. Simple as that.

Yet here you are; guess they were hollow...or that poison was slow-acting. LOL.

Not even a week and we're singing 'looney tunes'.
Winter has barely begun, and the young limberbacks have cabin fever.

People will tell us that we should appreciate what Spurrier has done here and i completely agree with that but we can not become complacent with success.

You hit it right on the head with the fact that every year we have a major achievement to overlook the fact that each year we had a MAJOR meltdown.

We need to take the next step. Period.

Go 12-0 the season after. No one is calling for anyone's head, we are just saying its time to take the next step. Can't get complacent with 11 wins, you must hunger for more.

Well it depends on how that 11-2 is. Let's say Florida turns it around and we lose a close one in the swamp and lose at a top 5 auburn and georgia only loses to us and wins the east. It would suck, but you can't complain about that. Were not Alabama.

Changes would need to be made. Obviously were not gonna fire Spurrier, especially as long as he's beating clemson. But I would say we would need some hardware in the next 3 years or Spurrier is gone. By hardware I mean at the very least an SEC east and a competitive SEC championship game. If it doesn't happen, then Spurrier will give someone else a try IMO. By no means should we ever fire Spurrier, he's earned the right to leave when he wants and has stated several times when he thinks he can't get it done he will step aside.

I'm sorry, but with three consecutive 11 win seasons, I find all this talk
comical. Were you old enough to realize what this team was like in the
mid 2000s ? (not that long ago) Or old enough to have gone through the 0-21
stretch of games ? (again, not really that long ago if you're older than
15 years old). Do you remember the first four years since Spurrier took
over here ? .... We weren't a really good program, and we had some of
the worst facilities in the SEC. .... I remember all of that and even beyond
those years when Gamecock football wasn't even THAT good.

ALSO,
Do you realize how difficult it is for ANY team, even the LSUs, ALABAMAs,
GEORGIAs, OREGONs etc..... to go three consecutive seasons with
11 wins ???? I'm sorry, but for anyone here who posted that they agree
that this program has to win MORE in the next few seasons or our coach
needs to step down is an embarassment to this fanbase !! Four consecutive
seasons of Top 25 rankings with improvements each season, and you
think you're entitled to more, or our Coach needs to go ?!?!?!?!
Success is not measured by Championship trophies when you have never
had anything CLOSE To this kind of success in the entire history of your
program. .. I'm going to break the bad news to you all now... We will
drop in the rankings and season records at some point soon... maybe
even next season, but that will by no means, mean that this program
and our coach has peaked, and needs to start considering leaving.
Our AD, our Admin and our Coaches are building a winning program here
and doing one hell of an outstanding job of it, but almost demanding
better than what we've done the past 3-4 years or Coach Spurrier should
leave ?!?!? I swear there are times when I am embarassed to be called
a Gamecock fan when I see posts like this. .... Seriously.

My questions is...... with the bolded statements above:
Just how to YOU plan to make that happen, and how are you sure coach
Spurrier will step down if this doesn't happen according to YOUR timeline ?
I'd really like to know that.

We were not mentioned when it came to college football before SOS came to Carolina ! Maybe every 10 years or so we'd have a team bring some national attention. SOS realized what SC needed to become a serious contender in college football. The new additions to facilities and upgrades along with SOS bringing a champions point of view has helped change what it means to be a Gamecock in modern times ! As someone posted recently his 5 year old son has never seen SC lose to clemson. We're on a roll, just keep it going and keep improving, as we also build men of character.

I'd really like to know that.
Yes. I was old enough to remember the 0-21 happening. I also vividly remember the 5-7s, 6-5s, 7-6s. I understand how far we have come. We are a perennial top 10 program which absolutely blows my mind considering 5-6 years ago we would be doing backflips to just get in the top 25 midseason.

I think you may have missed my first post. Especially the part where I said you simply can't complain about the last 3 years even with the tough losses. We have accomplished firsts in each season. But the fact is, is that there aren't many other firsts to accomplish besides the obvious. I fully understand we can't keep up this streak.

But also like I said, the past 3 years have had outstanding first time accomplishments overshadow terrible losses. We are starting to run out of first time accomplishments to ease the sting of these losses.

My opinion is that we are THERE now. Of course we can't win every game we play, but these awful losses that cost us chances to win the conference HAVE to stop. If it continues to happen every single year and it keeps costing us, it is my OPINION that Spurrier will step down, not that he should.

I don't think you understand Spurrier. He quit the University of Florida job after the Gators went 11-2, won the Orange Bowl, finished 3rd in the country, ... and the season was considered a disappointment by Gator fans. And when I say quit, I mean quit. He didn't leave for another job; he just left coaching all together and took a year off. (Urban Meyer also quit Florida). So it's my opinion that Spurrier will step down when Gamecock fans feel 11 win seasons are ho-hum. Ultimately, I think Spurrier will be devoured by the beast he created. He's turning Gamecock fans into entitled Gator fans.

I can agree with wanting better. I can agree that we need to get to a
point where we don't lose to unranked teams while we are ranked among
the best in the nations. I've even posted that on this board several times.
Once just a few days ago when I said our next hurdle to get over, is to
stop losing games we are heavily favored in. .. All that I can agree with
and have stated as such. What I have an issue with was the post(s)
where you place this blame on Coach Spurrier and somehow think if we
can't get past that point, he should leave and hand it to someone else.
Losing games we should have won, or were favored to win has been a
part of this program LONG before Coach Spurrier took over the job. I
remember a game we lost to Navy in 1984 that cost us a possible shot
at a number one ranking the following week, and eventually a shot at
a national Championship. I remember several games like that over the
course of my lifetime in decent seasons and bad ones as well. Saying
that if we don't get over that, Coach Spurrier needs to step down and
we need to start from scratch again for the sake of not beating teams
we were favored to win against.

It's frustrating YES, but if you look at it, those seasons under coach
Spurrier, we've also pulled off a big win (wins where we were underdogs
going in, yet pulled out a big win) '05 the loss to Georgia was offset with
big wins against UT at Knoxville and a Win against Florida.
'08 the loss to Vanderbilt was offset with a big win against a ranked
Ole Miss team, and another big win against UT.

in 2010 the loss to UK was offset with a win against #1 Alabama at the
time we played them, and an SEC East title.

2011 .. loss to Auburn was offset with the win over a favored UGA team
in Georgia.

2012 .. Loss to UF, Win over favored UGA

This past year .. loss to UT, big win over Missouri and a Favored Wisconsin
team.

Yes the losses could have given us a lot better season ending results,
but there were also BIG Wins with Spurrier that we should have lost
that we won, when losing them could have resulted in our not even
being ranked at the end of the season, or took us out of the Eastern
Conf. Race without a possibility of winning them late in the year.

We have work left to do, but I would not want to even attempt to do
them with any other coach than who we have running this program
right now. To suggest that he should step aside if we don't get over that
major flaw in our game, is unacceptable to me as a fan who has seen
some of the worse days of this program's history. I want to get past that
hump just like you, but I want a PROVEN SUCCESSFUL COACH at the
controls when we get there, and they don't come any better than Coach
Spurrier.
