I am thinking of taking my family to the caribbean this summer or sping or fall. Has anyone ever rented a home or villa off od VRBO down there? If so what was the experience like?

I rented a place in Vieques, PR off vrbo.com and had no issues. The owner was local and picked us up from the airport and brought us local lobsters for us to eat one night. If you're worried about committing to a stranger, I'd check the reviews, ensure that you have a local contact for any maintenance issues, and pay by credit card or Paypal so that you can dispute the charges if something goes wrong.

I've rented beach houses on VRBO and never had a problem. Just be sure to read the reviews. And depending on what part of the Caribbean, I imagine some of the owners may be in the US.

Not down there but have used them all over the US and never had a problem. Just remember, cheap is cheap and higher rents reflect better places. I have stayed at PGA West many times but found one 3,000 sq ft 3/4 on the green only $600 a week peak season, great pictures. Lesson learned, bad bad bad.

Don't forget HomeAway, and FlipKey

I've rented houses from VRBO and HomeAway and had great experiences with both of them.

Same here. Probably the 2 best ways to do it. There's always a good deal in there somewhere.
