Default Columbia to build a baseball stadium

The 4-3 vote will allow Columbia to pursue a minor league baseball team. I have long supported this but I hope the money to pay for it can be balanced. Either way, it is sure to have a mixture of opinions.

Definitely glad they passed this vote. I think this will be a help in that revitalization project. I look at Fluor Field in Greenville and hope Columbia can mirror some of that success.

I am totally against taxpayer dollars being spent in this fashion. It has already been proven that Columbia will not support minor league baseball. This is just another case of taxpayer dollars being flushed down the toilet.

That would be awesome. Gvl took the West end and made it a safer and nicer place to be than it was a few short years ago. Fluor Field is awesome and is very affordable entertainment for the family and friends. Hope Columbia can replicate this success.

Isn't a cost-benefit analysis fairly quick and easy to do? Why would that take weeks to prepare? And an even better question, why would you agree to move forward with a project when you have no idea if it makes sesnse financially?

It just seems like the decision makers are excited about the idea and have visions of something big and new and better in downtown Columbia, but have not done their homework.

I feel like they are rushing into this and if it fails it's going to hurt the city bad.

Because they already know the cost. Now they have to put it on paper for people who want to see it.

Bottom line is people what Columbia to change, the only way it changes is if you put money into it. Greenville is the perfect example. People didn't support the first minor league team down here, but lets get real, it was friggin mets franchise in a crappy stadium (which I loved as a child). A stadium like this in the middle of Columbia will change the appearance greatly. Columbia needs SOMETHING.

I'm all for Columbia changing and getting better. I'm just also about doing your due diligence. If it's true that they do already have all of the costs and benefits of the stadium mapped out and it's just as simple as putting it to paper, then why not do that immediately? That doesn't take weeks. Why not let the public know the true cost of everything since they are paying for it?

It seems crazy to me that some people are okay with throwing millions of dollars of public money and getting the city on the hook for 30 years and not being very thorough. Sure Columbia needs something and this would certainly be a big change that I would be for if the numbers are good.

There is zero accountability in Columbia, SC politics. The mayor and many of these city council members are guaranteed re-election no matter what. If this deal turns out to be a disaster, it's no skin off their backs. The mayor sees Bull Street as a prime opportunity for himself. If it works out, it's a feather in his cap and a nice resume builder when he undoubtedly tries to move on to a bigger political position. If it fails, well, Benjamin can always just fall back on being the mayor of Columbia. He's guaranteed re-election. So he and others figure, why wait for a cost-benefit analysis? The analysis may actually weigh against their grand scheme, and they can't have that. No, Benjamin and his lackeys are operating with house money that the city, not themselves, is on the hook for.

I don't see Columbia being able to mirror what Greenville has done mostly due to the fact that there is not much industry in Columbia to support it. Greenville is growing as a manufacturing hub and attracting a lot of different companies and people to the area. Revitalizing their downtown area is a byproduct of increased industry and money in the area. I just don't see that in Columbia.

On Bull Street. Have any of you driven around that area lately? Revitalization makes me laugh. Look at the surrounding area.

The problem will be how will the convince families to move into that area (as they are hoping will happen with the additional housing that is part of the overall plan) given the schools that it is zoned for - CA Johnson and its feeders? Not exactly the jewels of the Richland 1 School District.

Also, it's one thing to build a stadium when you already know that a team will be coming in. From what I understand they haven't had any "bites", per se, in that regard. "Build it and they will come" is a pretty big gamble to take with millions of taxpayer's money.

You can also pick the school you want them to attend in the district as long as you provide the transportation to and from the school. A lot of people do this.

It is my understanding that the Savannah Sand Gnats (Class A affiliate of the NY Mets) will be moving to Columbia if the stadium is built.

I believe the vote approved the contract to hire Hardball Capital (owners) to bring in the team and to operate the stadium.

I could see that happening, their stadium was built in 1926. I would love to have baseball back in Columbia. I drive up to Greenville all the time to watch the Drive play.

If I'm reading the article correctly, they haven't even done a cost/benefit analysis on this project. They voted without studying how it would impact the area.

I just have zero faith that this will work out. There has yet to be any work done on the Bull Street site. No demo of existing mental hospital facilities, no new infrastructure, nothing.

Prior to about 9 months ago, Benjamin & his cronies were pitching the minor league baseball stadium as merely a possible amenity for the Bull Street development. Yet, suddenly their tune changed... now they're claiming the baseball stadium is the lifeblood of the entire development, and that Bull Street will fail without the stadium. I find this flip-flopping disturbing, and it seems indicative that Benjamin & pals are fast-tracking this project with a lot of idealistic propaganda, combined with threats of doom if the city doesn't bow down to developer Bob Hughes's every wish. What's apparent is that Benjamin & his lackeys don't actually know many of the details about the $100 million Bull Street project. They appear to know only slightly more than the general public, which knows nothing, because our city leaders are ridiculously not disclosing any details on where our money is going.
