Default What Kind of Snake is This

What kind of snake is this? It was about 5-8 inches long. I believe it is a brown snake (http://srelherp.uga.edu/snakes/stodek.htm).

Also, sorry that I killed it, Spurt.

It happens. Not everyone has the fascination with snakes that I do...it's
Understandable.

One of my Labs had a newly hatched copperhead cornered a few weeks ago. I just called her off, scooped the snake into a bag with their poop scoop, and released the snake in an unpopulated area.

How far away?

From my understanding, and I am not expert, but snakes are pretty territorial and will find their way back to "their area."

Actually, snakes are not territorial at all. More Nomadic. They will stay
near an area if the food source is abundant or they can easily find mates.
If either of those are in (or become in) short supply they will leave the
area. They go where the food is. The myth of them homing in has been
around a while, but it comes (more than Likely) from people saying they
have taken one far off and dumped it, only to see it in their yard again
within a few days. Researchers who have tagged and tracked snakes
(all breeds) for decades have yet to find snakes that migrate back to
a specific area when they are moved out of their capturing area and
traced. The myth comes from the old adage about mice or roaches.
"There's no such thing as ONE _ _ _ _ ". Same with snakes. If you see
one in your yard, more than likely there are others close by. ESPECIALLY
this time of year. Early/Mid Spring is the height of mating season. Just
coming out of the winter brumation their first instinct is to get food, and
hunt for mates. Snakes have been tracked moving up to 7 miles in a
day looking for food. Once they find an area where food is abundant, they
will remain there until finding food is difficult, then they move on.

Here's a live version of a garter snake Spurticus mentioned above. Picked this guy up in my front yard and moved him to a wooded area behind my house to protect him from my dogs. Snakes are cool.

My aunt had 2 black snakes in her yard this week, she called my uncle from work to come get them. Luckily he works as a EMT right down the road. She said a few years ago she would have just killed them with the shovel, but I talked her into not killing them by showing how much good they do.

I understand that people hate snakes, and that they often kill them, but please try to learn about the ones that are helpful around your property and do your best to not kill them.

...agree. The only snake I ever killed was a timber rattler last year. 2 weeks ago, I relocated a small black snake from my patio.

If there's rats or something else for the snakes to eat, they will be in your area. If we kill off the non-poisonous ones, poisionous ones may move in and pick up where the others left off. Copperheads need to be disposed of...they will hurt people.

It is probably easier for most to learn which snakes are poisonous. In SC there are only 4 (rattler-pigmy/eastern/timber, copperhead, cottonmouth and corral).

And based on where in the state you won't see all 4 venomous snakes usually.

Bad snakes always have the fat head...it's quite obvious if you just look for a few secs and check.
