Default D-line Progress

http://www.gogamecocks.com/2014/06/11/599360/new-look-defensive-line-remains.html?sp=/99/113/&ihp=1 The Article talks about how the youngsters are coming along which is all well and good, but what intrigues me is
Quote:
Darius has had a quiet but good spring. He's up to about 245 to 250 now. He's holding his weight. He's being able to hold ground a lot better than he has in the past.
It would be ideal if English is 250+ by week 1. If he is, I think we will have the pass rushing threat that is necessary with Clowney and Quarles gone

SIAP, I didn't see it anywhere

Read this last night. It gave me a little bit of hope for the DL. Good to hear David Johnson is coming along. Hopefully he can provide somewhat of a pass rush.

I like the all around depth we have. We should be able to keep the guys very fresh and not see much drop off when rotating players. New blitz packages will have to be utilized to add pressure which will be key in helping out our young secondary.

A little surprised to see dukes at #1 at the second dt position instead of Dixon jr but I'm glad he is. If he can play up to his potential this year it would be amazing for our d line.

Agreed. If Dukes is outpacing DixonJr, then that means Dukes is badazz...which also means he is living up to potential. Anyone who's seen Dukes in action in HS, well, you know Dukes has a nasty streak. Bringing that streak up to the next level has been a challenge for him, but I love the idea of thinking that Dukes has arrived.

This is no knock on DixonJr, who is also one serious interior presence. It just means we have no inside two-depth weakness. Flush'em out and let the DEs and LBs wrack up.

We gonna be nasty on D in 2014.

I still believe we will have DL strength by depth rather than stardom. With the likely rotation at DT and so many quality guys vying to get onto the field, nobody need take a play off, and we may be able to wear down opposing offensive lines. We have a couple, at least with good quickness (Griffin, Lamin, Green) and some with good bulk and strength (Dukes, Dixon Jr) and Surratt. who seems to have both. At DE, we will likely have "specialists" with nobody already on board showing an edge-sealing ability combined with good penetration and pass rushing. I'm hoping Thomas comes in and is near-ready and that D Johnson is the tough playmaker at present size his HS days indicated.

Darius English is the 3rd strongest pound for pound player on the team with long arms and speed he will be the guy at DE this year, as a RS SO this is his year to burst on to the scene!

I am inclined to agree. He's definitely found a nutrition plan that works and he's committed himself in the weight room. Everything looks as though he's ready to make a big impact.

The staff appears to have already gotten English body ready for the Fall season. From all expert accounts he has all the tools to have a monster season. The talent level after English is huge and it is ideal to have 4 well rounded DE's. It appears we will use some combination of Chubs and Tweeners. I believe the tweeners will have a better impact because of their athletism. I not to optimistic on Thomas making it in on Summer II. I would love for him to some in and be able to compete on SEC level and provide some needed depth.

I'm curious why you think none of the DL we have coming back fit this description? Who was this guy besides Clowney last year and the year before or the year before or the year before...? English, Dukes, Lamin, Griffith, Cooper, the Dixon brothers, Johnson, Green, Harris, Surratt, one of the Washingtons or a freshmen have no chance to be this guy or it scares you because they have not shown it up to this point? Several of those listed were highly regarded before coming to USC and have waited to get their chance, they are hungry, have been in the system for a year and should be ready to light it up come Aug.

Don't worry man, you're not the only one who is petrified by that statement. Really, you're not the only one who's petrified of our defense regardless.

"We don't have a pass rusher" being a direct quote from our coach should be unsettling to any and everybody. USC has made a living with its defensive line getting after the passer. It has allowed them to sit the other 7 guys back in a zone and play the numbers game. Now it appears like we are going to have to send extra people which leads to trouble if you don't get to the QB. The field opens up and exposes those inexperienced Corners.

Its great to have a bunch of bodies, but we don't have any producers or anyone that has shown signs of being able to get after the QB. English is really all we have and its a wait and see with him.

The Dixons and Surratt have been solid but nothing spectacular. You need guys like them but they aren't going to make a game changing play.

Dukes, Griffin, and Harris haven't done anything of note in their playing time.

Cooper is transitioning from Linebacker and hasn't been able to stay healthy.

Green has been battling injuries since he has gotten here and Washington has been battling concussions.

Johnson and Lamin are unknowns. It seems like they are a talented pair, but we gotta see some results this Fall.

Blake McClain is probably out for the year.

Thomas and Wideman are bordering unlikely to qualify. Its pretty much a win that Wideman is likely going to be able to go to FUMA.

Sawyer and Ritchie are at a JUCO.

Looking back on it, I think our staff did a poor job with Defensive End recruiting but are making it up with this current class. Whammy just needs to bridge the gap until the reinforcements get here.

Im no expert. However, some of our failure to recruit top DEs lately may be because no one wanted to play behind Clowney and Sutton. Just a thought.

Agreed but this is not new. Anytime we are counting on a thin DE "beefing up" over the summer, or moving a recruited linebacker to DE, we are in trouble.

English got tossed around when he was in there last year. Hopefully he can hold his own this year, or as you said, it will be tough.

In my opinion, pressure will only come from numbers this year.

I think you are reading in to it wrong, it says, "the pass rusher" and I think he is referring to "Clowney" and someone stepping up to be that guy. I think we will use of different looks to send pressure from angles and Adam's is preparing the public for the change. We were 7th in the league in sacks last year, I'll bet money that we have more than 25 sacks this year. The experience at LB will vastly help improve the overall play of the DL IMO as will the experience of being with Adam's for another year.

I have said a few times that I feel similarly to the way you do, with a caveat. Our pressure is going to need to come from the interior linemen or LB/safety blitzes as opposed to the defensive end pressure we've seen for so long. But there were times our DE's lost outside containment on the edge because they were so sack focused. Clowney @ Georgia last year as a prime example. I really believe if our ends can hold the edges and slip their blocks to tackle at the right time we can have a very effective defense that will just look different than in years past.

I would expect us to give up more big plays overall, and our opponents to have more time of possession. Our offense needs to really avoid the 3 and outs or it can snowball.
