Default Marcus Lattimore Scholarship

Lattimore Scholarship Established

Quote:
The University of South Carolina Athletics Department has announced the receipt of a gift presented to the Garnet Way Campaign, establishing an endowed football scholarship honoring former Gamecock running back Marcus Lattimore.

The endowment will provide a scholarship each year, given by the David Glenn Family from Greenville, S.C., and will be awarded each year to a deserving football walk-on student-athlete. Like Lattimore, the recipients shall be of the highest character and integrity while exhibiting exemplary leadership skills.

Serious question and I hate to be a party pooper but I have to ask.

Is the NCAA really ok with this? Sounds kind of like having an 86th scholarship. Hopefully the compliance department did their homework on this and we don't have any issues.

This is a perfect way to honor Latti. There should be no reason that this violates NCAA rules since it isn't an "athletic" scholarship as it does not come from the football program itself as it is from a private scholarship.

A gift given to the athletic department and then distributed to a student athlete doesn't come from the athletic department?

I'll give it the benefit of the doubt and say no, but does private funds going to a student athlete not also raise it's own set of concerns for you?

If a walk-on earns a scholly, maybe it could be awarded by the University in the name of the David Glenn family as so it doesn't look like an impermissible benefit from a booster or Alum to a student athlete. It's a great Idea though.

I don't understand how this doesn't violate the scholly limit. What's to keep any school from naming scholarships after twenty famous alumni, and having a total of 105 football scholarships?

This has to apply towards the 85 limit. It just means an outside party is paying for it rather that the athletic department.

15.5.1.2.1

Exception—Receipt of Institutional Academic Aid Only.

In football or basketball, a student-athlete who was recruited (see Bylaw 15.02.8) by the awarding institution and whose only source of institutional financial aid is academic aid based solely on the recipient’s academic record at the certifying institution, awarded independently of athletics interests and in amounts consistent with the pattern of all such awards made by the institution, may compete without counting in the institution’s financial aid team limits, provided he or she has completed at least one academic year of full-time enrollment at the certifying institution and has achieved a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.000 (on a 4.000 scale) at the certifying institution. (Adopted: 10/27/05 effective 8/1/06, Revised: 1/15/11 effective 8/1/11)

It seems like walk-ons can get academic scholarships and it will not count against the scholarship limit if the athlete has no other financial aid, keeps a 3.0 GPA, and it has nothing to do with athletics, and has already been enrolled for a year. This Lattimore Scholarship doesn't say anything about GPA and it seems you have to be a football player to get it so, it looks like it has to count. I really wish they would raise the scholarship limits to 100. Also give more for other sports. This is the main reason I would like to see the big conferences defect and pool their resources to get this done.

We already give our left over scholarships to a walk-on. To me the 85 most deserving players should get those 85 scholarships whether they are a walk-on or not. Now that is one more scholarship athlete we have to tell they won't get a scholarship and maybe should transfer because we have to give it to a walk-on eventhough he may deserve that scholarship more.

Question: Is character or leadership solely related to the player's academic record and if only for football team walk-ons why is it not totally dependent on athletics participation?

If doesn't count against the scholly limit this has to be the reason. It must not count for NON-RECRUITED student-athletes. It probably has to be a 3rd party scholarship too. I just wonder why we don't have more of these scholarship already. We should.

Not really.

Our penalties were self-imposed in regards to the Whitney.

When we met with the NCAA. They were like, "Uh, not sure why you self-imposed. Everything was handled properly."

I believe this is like sponsoring an athletic scholarship. It essentially frees up the cost for the department to use somewhere else, is an honor for the recipient, but still counts as one of the 85.

I don't think so. If that were the case it would be better to make it an academic scholarship or just give the donation normally since we already have football scholarships walk ons.

I am pretty sure it doesn't count against the limit, so long as the recipient was not a "recruited athlete."

Another possible “advantage” to being a non-recruited walk-on can be found in situations in which a prospect receives a scholarship from, for example, their high school booster club or a local civic club, such as Kiwanis or Rotary.
If their athletic achievements are the primary reason that a prospect wins such a scholarship, a non-recruited walk-on can accept the scholarship with no consequences.

Got this from an informative site, it explains it pretty well: http://www.informedathlete.com/to-be...r-nonrecruited

This is great, because a walk-on can get this scholarship and it frees up another scholarship for a new recruit.
